Message from the playwright:

I started a year long research journey that took me to Africa 5 years ago. Since then, I've written as well as workshoped this play based on the life and artistry of Nina Simone and The Disinherited characters she sang about. I'm not the only one deeply moved by this music. When I met Gina, I knew imediatley, she was my Nina. Having the same regal appearance as Nina is only the outward similiarity that drew me to Gina. As writer/creator, I deliver an 16 character interpretation which includes MLK Jr, Lorraine Hansberry, Mama, Daddy, Young and Elder Nina and many more. "Rhythm Drama" that tributes the deeper levels of the human condition while juxtaposing the superficial expectations placed on black entertainers and the aging black female artist in America.

My objective is to share this story with an elaborate staged reading and music tribute, in order to raise the funds for a full production which includes the use of multimedia, dance choreogaphy and full wordrobes. I'll need to pay for my band, sound engineer, videographer & editor, choreographer, wordrobe, hair & makeup, theater rental, piano rental, tech/ crew/lights, advertising, and transportation.

All persons involved with this show are deeply rooted in paying homage to the legacy of the real human experience, the  raw. We need to raise 10,000  by this Spring to do a full run this Summer. You will be part of a thoroughly dedicated pursuit of making dreams come true and shedding light on a legend whose skin color has sparked recent controversial conversations in Black Hollywood. Join us as we sing Happy Birthday Nina! at Pops theater in Dunsmuir, Northern California Feb. 20th. Then head down to Redding, CA where I have personally been called to spread this message to the rural under served, low income communities of the North. Many thanks to the Shasta County Arts Council for their sponsorship and tax dectible donations can be mailed directly to Shasta County Arts Council. With this tour from the South to the North, I'l be taking my cast and crew up the coast to the Mount Shasta region, a vast mountain known for its spiritual energy. A perfect place for sentimental entertainment as opposed to the commercial appeals hot off the presses each week. From my heart to yours I bring you...

Author's Bio:

The girl who flunked recess because she was allergic to the sun, had nothing ordinary about her, above or beneath the skin. What seemed to be a curse immersed her into make believe worlds that refused to remain on the pages of novels, poems, plays and scriptures. Instead, they lingered in the tapestry of her mind where she rebuilt them, weaving in new characters to compliment to them. She waited in the shade, an outsider to her peers until gaining a reputation as a neat hairstylist, beginning her braiding business at age 10. A newfound confidence in the powers of her own two hands gave not only an extent of financial esteem but naturally blossomed a freedom to write, dance, act and preside over the Drama & Speech Team at Thornridge High School on the south side of Chicago. Success at weekly competitions each year culminated in numerous first place championship awards at regional, sectional and state levels. Named 'most dramatic' by her senior class, the same carried over in college at the national Speech level in New Orleans. She went on to obtain a BFA in Performing Arts from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Hollywood, California c/o 2012, where she first workshopped her original play based on the life of Nina Simone. Meanwhile, she joined the cast of Landing of the Urban Rebels. Here, she played the Collective Black Woman at the Complex Theatre in Hollywood, alongside Empire's Trai Byers. Donna Carroll, proud mother and entrepreneur, is currently working to publish and produce her original stage production entitled, 'I Shall be Released.' In her own words, 'Tomorrow is my turn' is not a crutch or an excuse. It's a plan."
