I am a 19 y.o. girl from Slovakia and I started to study at the University of St Andrews in September 2019.
I love it so much because it was always my dream to study in Scotland and generally get the best education possible.
I am studying psychology, as I struggled with depression for the last 6 years and I want to be able to help other people struggling with mental health because I know how it feels.
I was worried about coming here due to money, and now as it turned out, I was right. My mom is disabled and I don't live with my father. Our financial situation is not the best.
My country doesn't offer any scholarships. I am not liable for any student loan here as I am from the EU. My tuition fee is paid by SAAS, which I am so grateful for. But the accommodation prices here are unbelievably high for me. One year of living at uni accommodation is £6,000 (living in the city is even more expensive). And that's the part I am unable to manage on my own.
I am looking for a job, but St Andrews is a really small town. I do have some life savings, but all of them are already almost gone, all spend on coming here and paying for the first semester.
I really do want to continue studying here. It feels like a dream came true, but now it is fastly disappearing. I did not expect that I will have to leave because I don't have money to pay for accommodation. I am trying everything, because I know I will not get another chance for such a great education. It is the best thing that ever happened to me, to get accepted at such an amazing University and have the opportunity to study here.
I really don't want to lose it.
