Dear family, friends and fellow cyclists,
Someone once told me that "you can't get support when you need it if you don't ask".
So here I am humbly requesting support from my fellow cyclists, friends and family that have showed concern over the past week.
On Monday September 16 at around 3:30pm I was out for my weekly eagerly anticipated fitness ride. The weather was Bay Area perfect! I never could have imagined what would transpire within the first 2 miles of my 25 mile ride. I was heading down the Embarcadero towards Jack London square when I saw a car speeding out of his lane and directly towards me swerving into the bicycle lane on my side of the road. I did my best to avoid a direct head on hit but in the end I took the brunt of the impact in my left upper thigh and knee. At the moment before impact all I could think about was "how can I steer this bicycle in order to increase my likelihood of survival ?!" This person was not only driving aggressively in the opposite direction of the lane he was in but according to eyewitnesses he was on his phone which is likely what resulted in him swerving into the bike lane and me.
He sped off leaving behind a part of his drive side mirror along side my bicycle and I on the road.
I was happily surprised by how many people were there to assist me in getting an ambulance, securing my bicycle with the firefighters, making my police report and even getting the security video footage of the hit and run which I've shared below. I am touched and humbled by the kindness of all those good folk that showed me the better side of Oakland. It was clear to me even as I laid on the curb spitting out gravel from my mouth, in shock and with slowly increasing pain that the driver of the car that hit me is odd man out in Oakland.
Today I am starting this gofundme because I need your help.
As my pain subsides my medical bills are piling up. Ambulance costs, Emergency Room Visit, X-rays, Specialist consultations and an $1000 MRI have me at loss as to how I will maneuver all this debt. My insurance isn't the best but it's what I can afford. I can personally cover some of my expenses but if have to cover it all some sacrifices will have to be made. Family plans set aside. Expectations lowered.
