Hurricane Harvey Immediate Needs

Sports Society for American Health is a local Beaumont, TX non profit 501(c)3 charity working to improve health and the needs for sustaining health after Hurricane Harvey are overwhelming.
With having been on the ground through Hurricanes Rita, Ike & now Harvey, we have first hand experience with providing for survivor needs that are so often overlooked especially once the emergency teams leave. People have so many urgent needs to survive.
It takes weeks and months to recover from these disasters and people in the affected areas have immediate needs that cannot wait for government grants and loans to be approved. Many slip through the cracks and will never receive necessary funding to survive or to recover.
Some of these urgent but non emergent needs include:
Tools, bleach, trashbags, fungicide and other supplies to remove sheetrock, debris, spoiled food, etc. from flooded homes. The quicker people can clean and tear away flooded carpet, sheetrock, etc., the less chance for mold, disease, and increased damage from water. This ultimately reduces costs of repairs longterm.
Supplies for animals especially sick animals. So many pets are left homeless. Anything we can provide to allow pets to stay with their owners will ease the burden on shelters as they have exceeded capacity.
Mosquito spray, basic bandages for small accidents, corticoid steriod creams, over-the-counter benadryl, antibiotic ointment, rescue inhalers, any over the counter medication, etc.
Food for kids with food allergies and other special needs.
Cash for individual needs. So many have no way to work as there are few paying jobs. Cash for small needs simply to get through the day until companies can resume business.
These are only a few examples. This is flexible and our job is to fill gaps that are overlooked or not met to keep people functioning. The more people we can empower by meeting their basic needs, the more people who are then able to work more effectively on recovery and on restoring normalcy.
