Hurricane Eta Relief Fund- La Lima

Donation protected

I’m Natalia Fernandez, a second year physiotherapy student, with the dream of working in Honduras for those most needed, and person affected by Hurricane Eta. I have lived most of my life in Honduras, with a long family line being of influential people in our communities helping those in need with medical brigades, mission trips with foreign churches, with our own Orphanage project  and physiotherapy brigades from Shriners Hospital all over Honduras and Guatemala. Both my parents, Hosman Fernandez, Head of Physiotherapy in our clinic CEFISE and Gloria Fernandez, administrator of said Clinic, have seen the devastation in our home town and communities all around us. As COVID-19 strikes in Europe, I felt powerless because I couldn’t help from so far away.

Hurricane Eta has flooded homes  from Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras (primarily the Central American isthmus). This fund is created for those in La Lima, Valle de Sula, Honduras, a municipality in the department of Cortes. It used to be the home to the corporate headquarters of the Tela Railroad Company, subsidiary of Chiquita Brand and lived through the golden era of the fruit exportation.  Two of the main rivers, the Ulua and the Chamelecon, completely devasted the surrounding communities. The El Cajón dam is completely full and presents great danger for further flooding and devastation.

Plantations for banana, sugar cane, and livestock; being the primary center for agriculture for the northern part of the country, have been completely devastated and lost due to the immense flooding.  This Hurricane did not claim many lives but millions of people have lost their jobs, lively hood, homes, churches, roads, community clinics and schools that are a vital piece of every community infrastructure. The COVID-19 pandemic has a big part as well, just in this department (state) of Cortés, there have been over 27,000 infected. Meanwhile, the yearly Dengue fever season will claim more lives than both of these disasters combined. This is due to the mosquito borne virus rapidly increasing from the ideal tropical and humid conditions caused by the flooding.

This fund was created in mind to aid those that have worked for generations in order to achieve their livelihood but have lost it all and come out just with the clothes on their back. Every cent donated will go directly to those affected by the hurricane in the La Lima community. This will include home appliances (stove, refrigerator and cooking utensils), bedding and items such as towels, clothes, shoes, urgent food, stocking of pantry and hygiene products to help them get started back in life. I will be posting receipts and proof of all donations once I have them. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact! If there are any problems with donations going thru, please contact me as well!
