Hurricane Dorian Relief to Bahamas

Tax deductible
Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas on Sunday, September 1st, 2019 and left behind a path of destruction. Dorian was the most devastating hurricane to hit the Bahamas since records began in 1851. With sustained winds of 185 mph and higher than 200 mph gusts, this was the first category 5 hurricane to strike the Abaco Islands. The United Nations said that 70,000 people are in need of life-saving assistance on Grand Bahama and Abaco islands.

FaverGray and The Bailey Group have teamed up to provide relief and resources to the Hope Town, Elbow Cay community in the Bahamas.

The companies have partnered with Hope Town Rising, an initiative of Community Assistance Foundation Inc. (CAF), formed in the wake of Hurricane Dorian. CAF was created by Jacksonville-based property management company Vesta Property Services  in 2009 to provide safety, dignity, comfort and assistance to communities and their members both directly and through service organizations that share our purpose.

To date: FaverGray and The Bailey Group have donated $40,000+ for air transportation. The Bailey Group and Flagler Hospital have donated $100,000 in medical supplies and relief.

Since the late 80s, FaverGray co-founders, James Gray, Keith Faver, as well as, The Bailey Group’s President and CEO, Mark Bailey, have traveled to Hope Town, Elbow Cay.  Fast forward to 2019 and they share 30 years of cherished memories with the heart and soul of the island – the people. The trio also shares a home on the island and has built long-lasting friendships with 6th generation Bahamians.

“We feel a personal responsibility to help the Hope Town Community – they are like family,” says Gray.

The trio not only shares a home but a plane as well, which they have donated to carry supplies down to the island. FaverGray, MySky Aviation, and The Bailey Group have been working together since the Hurricane hit to gather and transport medical volunteers and supplies to the island.

As of September 16, 2019, the group has been responsible for shipping 8,000 pounds of supplies, including medical supplies, doctors, nurses, and EMT personnel to the islands. Mark Bailey is on the board of Flagler Hospital and is responsible for the coordination of sending volunteer nurses and supplies to the island.  Bailey has been communicating with nurses on the ground in the Bahamas and determining their needs.

Their focus is specifically on Abaco, not only because of their three decades of history with the island but the size of the island as well. The island is a smaller one among the Abaco Islands and, Jim Gray says, it’s “lower on the totem pole” in terms of relief efforts.

FaverGray is not only involved in the initial triage efforts, but are looking at long term plans for rebuilding the Bahamas. As one of the leading construction firms in Jacksonville, FaverGray has a team of talented and experienced professionals who will lead the way in managing reconstruction. Faver and Gray will be traveling to the Bahamas to determine a strategic plan going forward. Their focus is not overloading the island with supplies, but instead working towards rebuilding the infrastructure. The company will be looking to bring labor to the island, possibly 50-100 workers, at a later date.

GoFundMe Campaign donations will be designated to the Hope Town Rising Initiative through The Community Assistance Foundation:

To marshal and deploy the resources, expertise, and knowledge needed to assist the Hope Town and Elbow Cay community in recovery and rebuilding. In the near term this means providing care for those remaining on Elbow Cay and stabilizing infrastructure and the built environment. In the long term, it means providing the support and help needed to implement the vision and plans of community leaders in restoring this beautiful and special place.

The more money we can raise, the more families we can help. Like the Hope Town Rising Facebook page to stay up to date on all of the progress that we've made. Thank you for your support!

INITIAL OBJECTIVES (Immediate, Completed and/or Ongoing)

Hope Town Clinic

Provide immediate care. Hope Town Rising (HTR) has made taking care of the people of Elbow Cay an immediate priority. In the wake of the storm, private aircraft flights provided by HTR founders FaverGray and The Bailey Group carried trauma doctors and nurses from Flagler Health+ to the storm ravaged island. After treating and stabilizing the most urgent emergency cases, evacuations were arranged of those most in need. Additional flights in the weeks that followed have brought medicine and needed equipment and supplies. A 24-hour-a-day clinic was built in Hope Town to treat those injured in the storm, and those injured or taken ill during the dangerous and dirty aftermath and cleanup of the island. The clinic has seen more than 500 cases since the storm, and is providing the only full-time medical care on the island and for much of the surrounding area.

Supply Shipment

Provide and mobilize specifically requested stabilization materials to Elbow Cay thru the Hope Town Volunteer Fire Rescue. The tug/barge “American” arrived on Elbow Cay on 9/13/2019 to deliver the initial supplies and materials and these have now been integrated into the recovery effort. This was the first major delivery to arrive in Hope Town since the storm. Special thanks to McCulley Marine for their efforts here.

Fire Risk Assessment

HTR facilitated a three-day visit by members of St Johns County Fire and Rescue, where personnel checked and repaired all fire equipment and fixed the water pumps that were salvageable.  A portable pump cart was made to make it more efficient to get contaminated water out of the cisterns and restore fresh drinking/bathing water. They talked to the town leaders about the huge fire danger and suggested giving all residents a portable fire extinguisher to be the first line (by getting extinguishers off destroyed boats and buildings). They also told leaders to keep warning the residents about fire danger on their daily message. They mitigated mold and informed residents how to do so as well, and the danger of mold, and also explained the personal protection needed, including respiratory, when dealing with mold. Additionally, during their three days, a significant amount of salvage and overhaul was completed.  Their efforts were both needed and appreciated by Hope Town leadership.

Stateside Relief

HTR and others have provided support and relief to multiple refugee families and individuals from Marsh Harbour that have relocated to Florida.  This will continue to be an ongoing mission of the group.
