Hurrican Eta - repairing Freddy's family home

Eta, a category 4 hurricane with winds of 240km/h hit Nicaragua on the 3rd November, causing over 5,000 people to be dislodged and hitting local communities hard.

Someone we know was affected.

You may remember Freddy Naira as the funny, charismatic, slightly eccentric (sorry Freddy) Nicaraguan volunteer from Raleigh 16N who bought groups together, provided us with new life perspectives, and designed our T-shirt.

Freddy was recently forced to move back to Esteli, where his grandma lives (grandma in photo at the top). Half of her home was made of old wood and cheap roof materials, which were badly damaged by Eta, making it impossible for her to cook, use the shower or toilet.

In order to re-build the section of the house that was most impacted, Freddy and his dad have worked on a budget from local building/hardware shops (the cheapest one pictured below).

For those that can't read Spanish, they need cement, bricks, blocks and other basic building materials to build a kitchen area and bathroom area, and although they may ask local handymen for help with more technical work, they'll be doing all the work themselves.

The costs above translate to $1,482 USD using the cheapest materials that stop water entering during the rainy season. He predicts this would take at least 2-years to raise between him and his dad with his current job (working overtime) and reached out to me to see if I knew a way to help speed things up.

To give you an idea of how much your money would get, a single brick costs 82 pence, and 100% of your donation will go directly into Freddy's sister's PayPal account.

Freddy will share updates as the work takes place, and pictures of the completed project, giving you full visibility what is happening with your money.

2020 has been a hard year for us all, but this is a chance for us to give a little back. Please share this page with anyone who may also be able to help!
