Hugo "El Inmenso" Cabrera Fighting To Beat Cancer

Donation protected
Hugo "El Inmenso" Cabrera embodies strength and grit, and will need our love and  support to fight his battle with pancreatic cancer. We are counting on the money collected to help pay for the bills that will accumulate through treatment.  He will start a grueling chemo treatment next week and will be unable to work on a daily basis. Your generous financial support will help to alleviate his financial situation. We appreciate any money you can donate to help our friend and coach, Mr. Cabrera, during these trying times.

Hugo Cabrera is one of the kindest human beings you'll ever meet.  He has two sons (Ricky and Javier Cabrera) and a daughter (Ayanna Cook) and seven grandkids. Hugo is mostly known for his accomplishments on the basketball hardwood as well as in the education field which he has been involved with for the last 24 years.  His retirement will be October of this year.

Hugo Cabrera has dedicated most of his life serving the students from Miami Dade County Public Schools. His first job in the school system was at Killian High School in 1997, where he held the position of Community Involvement Specialist. During this time, he worked with students and parents to help provide support and resources to his school community. When Hialeah Gardens High School opened its doors in 2009, he became part of the school's inaugural staff.

At the school he plays many important roles, including school-parent liaison , administrative discipline team member, and basketball coach. He serves in each role with immense integrity and great heart. He is compassionate with parents, offering advice and support when their children are called into the office for disciplinary reasons. His office is always buzzing with kids, some of whom he calls "his kids" from the basketball team. He watches over those kids with great care, often serving as a mentor or father figure for his players. He makes sure they stay on track and holds them to the highest standards. He knows each player well and works with them both on and off the court so they can become the best version of themselves.

As a matter of fact, you often find Mr. Cabrera at the student services department trying to get the counselors to provide academic support and resources for the students. He is a gentle giant, with a kind word and a great smile for everyone he meets. He is loved by all and contributes to the positive culture at our school.

Hugo was the first Dominican to ever play in the NBA. Cabrera played his college ball at East Texas State University. Cabrera was playing for the Dominican team in San Lazaro in Puerto Rico in 1976. His tremendous performance prompted Milwaukee Bucks general manager Wayne Embry to select Cabrera with the 8th pick, of the 10th round, in the 1976 draft. Cabrera worked out with the Bucks that summer and was able to make an impact with the Bucks. He returned to play with San Lazaro and in 1978 tried out with the New York Knicks where he played a couple seasons.
