The Goal:
A book in the hands of a child opens lifelong journeys of imagination, inspiration and comfort. Two Maine teachers brainstormed a way to mitigate the stress and anxiety their students are feeling due to the onset of COVID-19 and the reality of remote learning. Yet, many of the students they teach do not have enough books in general, let alone books that mirror their goals and aspirations. This lack of access widens the equity gap for learners. The goal of My Book Forever is to provide engaging and culturally responsive books as gifts to vulnerable students.
The Population:
During this unprecedented time of unpredictable and unfamiliar academic shifts, children need the type of reassurance that only a well-chosen and well-loved book can provide. Over the years, Portland Public Schools' multilingual student population has grown exponentially and has become increasingly more diverse. Currently, the district has over 2,400 students who come from homes where over 60 different languages are spoken. These students represent about 35% of Portland Public Schools’ total enrollment. Additionally, 53% of the student body in the district qualify for free or reduced price lunch based on family income. Your donation to My Book Forever will supply engaging and culturally responsive books as gifts to students in need of resources.
The Plan:
Books will be chosen by ELA teachers, equity team leaders and school librarians. They will be mailed directly to students' homes, therefore, they will be a gift, and not feel like a hand out. Your contribution of $25 will supply 2 paperback books and the cost of mailing to students in need. Your contribution of $100 will supply 8 paperback books and the cost of mailing to students in need.
Local Partners:
Engaging local bookstores, such as Print, will be an integral part of this project. We are confident that we can make this happen while adhering to the stay-at-home mandates of our city. Safety will be prioritized as much of this can be done online and delivered via mail.
Local Inspiration:
“I emphasize that books in the home are very valuable and an important thing through life,” Ashley Bryan, writer and illustrator of children's books.
