Howlin4Spirit Companion Animal REScue and Senior Hound Sanctuary...an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, began on January 2, 2004 when I walked in to Rutherford County, NC's 'high-kill'(3Xs/week) Animal Control facility and asked the officer-in-charge(who was sitting at the front desk watching a football game on TV) what their 'return to owner/adoption rate' was...his answer was '3%'.
I was stunned, and quite frankly, angry..which immediately catapulted me into action.I told him, 'I have 12 yrs of volunteer 'rescue' work under my belt, and I know that I can't save them all but I can certainly help save some'.
He rolled his eyes and took a deep breath, as I went to work taking inventory and pictures of the dogs on death-row.
That night, I spent 13 hrs posting their pictures up on the Internet, sending them to regional rescues and 'no-kill' shelters all along the eastern seaboard. The next day, I had several responses asking me how they could help. That started the wheels rolling, literally. That was over 8,100 dogs ago, and we(myself and hubby) are still rescuing as many as we have room for, as space becomes available, each day. Howlin4Spirit CARes has helped place fully-vetted(spay/neutered, micro-chipped, 1st yr vaccines, heart worm and internal parasite prevention) rescued pups into 'no-kill' shelters and rescues, and into loving, responsible homes/families who have opened their hearts to a healthy, loving, well-socialized companion animal in need of a safe, new beginning.
We rescue all sizes and breeds, but we especially reach out to the seniors, special needs and hound breeds(who are 'dumped' every Fall by their owner/breeders when they don't want the expense of feeding/caring for them any longer...they take them out into the rural/country areas and leave them to fend for themselves). Howlin4Spirit is reaching out to you for help, to allow us to continue our rescue efforts for the homeless dogs in need.
All funding goes directly to support and provide veterinary care for the dogs we rescue and re-home and those iwho will remain with us in the Senior/Special Needs sanctuary.
There are many dogs still in need of a safe haven from which to start their new life; and for many, our sanctuary is their only hope. We have dedicated the past 12 years to this endeavor and have depleted all of our resources, so are now reaching out to you.
