Emergency Shelter Overflow

Homelessness in Waukesha

"A donation of $30 can shelter one individual for one night; complete with meals, transportation, and supportive services, but as little as $1 can help us reach our goal."

The Problem
Waukesha County has just 126 traditional shelter beds available to the most vulnerable individuals in the county - people experiencing homelessness. Shelter providers track data to show success rates and get an idea of the intensity of the county's needs - understanding that the "official" counts of homelessness are only snapshots, and do not capture the full scale of the problem.

Our data shows us that our shelter capacity is not meeting the need. Not only do some individuals and families not qualify for traditional shelter settings, but at times, shelters are full. Inclement weather - be it extreme heat or cold - drives the immediate necessity to find adequate shelter for people experiencing homelessness.

Creating a Path Towards a Solution
In response to the county's needs for shelter beds, the Housing Action Coalition of Waukesha County, Inc. has developed plans to operate an Emergency Winter Overflow Shelter program. The program will begin to house individuals on January 1, 2017 and run through April 30, 2017. This plan is just one facet of implementing a permanent solution for the county.

The physical shelter, located at 1721 Northview Road will house men. The shelter will offer personal sleeping space; breakfast; bathroom and shower facilities; transportation to and from the location; and many supportive services to assist shelter guests in gaining their independence and stability. Supportive services will include case management in the form of long-term goal planning, job and housing searches, advocacy, mental health services, alcohol & drug abuse counseling (AODA), as well as resources and/or referrals that provide food, clothing, and health care assistance.
In addition to the shelter, the Coalition is raising funds to provide motel voucher stays for women and children. Program participants who utilize motel vouchers will receive all of the same supportive services.
We are also working with community members to operate independent warming centers to fill additional gaps.

How You Can Help
Being a small non-profit agency, has not stopped our effort to embark on a BIG goal. We could not do this work without support from both our funders, and the local community. We are fundraising, but we are still in need of resources to ensure that the program is accessible to every individual that comes to us for shelter.

This is not just a shelter, but an opportunity to transition. Your donation not only guarantees that an individual or a family has a warm place to stay, but also offers them invaluable resources to gain their independence.
