They share their LOVE of FIRST Lego League and live by the Core Values taught by this program.
At the State Championship, they were honored with the "Heart of Gracious Professionalism Award" as well as winning the Top Robot Performance award and the all around Champions Award.
This does not come easy to them. They spend hundreds of hours of dedication. This year, not only did they compete, they mentored San Antonio Elementary by volunteering every Monday and prepare them for the qualifier and then the State competition! They also mentored 3 teams from Cottonwood Elementary, 1 team from Rio Ranch and 5 teams in Farmington, NM. They went to Las Cruces to compete this year so they could help the the tournament director at the Socorro competition. They had so much fun they went to Los Alamos to volunteer, then to Farmington, then to Alamogordo. In FIRST Lego League "Gracious Professionalism" means helping other teams the way you would help your teammates. Sharing information with other teams to help elevate them in goals.
Last year, The H.O.T. Squad was honored to represent New Mexico at the 2018 World Championship. They won the 3rd Place Gracious Professionalism Award. Later we found out that since 1999, they were the FIRST team to ever win an award at the World Championship from New Mexico!
The level of competition is huge in this program. Teams around the state are sponsored and coached by Sandia Labs, Los Alamos Labs, NASA, Intel, the Air Force bases, FTC and FRC teams. Yet this team from Socorro, NM has won two years in a row. This is the 6th and final year for this team at this level. Next year they will move up to FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge).
They are preparing for the 2019 World Championship with the goal to win! FIRST Lego League has taught them that nothing is out of their reach if they put in the work! No matter how they rank at the end of the week, they will represent NM in a positive light.
They will make you proud!
