Honoring Van Soy's Life

Donation protected
On 11/23/20, Van Kosal Soy passed away at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston of complications due to cancer. He was 20 years old.

Van will be remembered for his big smile and his big love for his family, friends, and life. He was born 16 weeks premature. He was the littlest of the littles, but he was born to be a fighter. He fought hard his entire life, going to so many hospital visits with his mom, but always with an easy smile and hope for a brighter future. They were always an inseparable team.

Van loved food, especially pho and his Yiey's babao (porridge). He loved listening to and making music. He loved writing lyrics and poems. He loved to draw. He loved the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell. He loved making things with his hands, on a CNC machine. He loved his dad, mom, stepfather, brother, and sister. He loved his uncles and his extended family. He loved his cousins. He loved video games and his dogs, Jazzy and Cookie. He loved Martha's Vineyard and told us he was never too old for Flying Horses. Most importantly, he loved his baby sister, Maliyah. He was a great and proud brother and they had a bond that will last forever. We will make sure of it.

He loved so freely and so easy. We should all learn to love that way.

Van was predeceased by his infant brother and his father. They are now together, finally, and probably talking up a storm while fishing in a secret honey hole. He is no longer in pain and is at peace.

That said, my sister, Deanna still needs to properly honor Van and his life. She drove down to Boston religiously to see him every day during the 1-hour visitation window during Covid. Even on days I got to visit, she somehow convinced the staff to let her have her own 1-hour time. She filled his hospital room with all his favorite snacks and all his favorite board games. When her car broke down, she continued to find a way to get to him and never missed a day by his side.

I know that it's a difficult year for everyone, but I also know Deanna and her family would appreciate seeing your comments and notes here, and if you are so inclined, I know she would appreciate help in honoring Van's life and making things somewhat whole with the upcoming medical bills and funeral costs. We can never let finance ruin the mourning and healing.

Thank you so much for your kindness and love. May it be returned to you 100 folds.

We love you Van, forever and a day.

Love,

Oum
