Caroline Salem's Home Adaptation Fundraiser

Hi,My name is Caroline Salem and October 31st my life changed forever! Here's my story;What was supposed to be only a routine kidney stone blasting turned to a matter of life and death. During the procedure I contracted sepsis.  This quickly resulted in me ending up in ICU in a matter of hours. This then escalated rapidly to septic shock resulting in multi organ failure. I was on life support ventilation, dialysis, high dosage of adrenaline to keep my heart pumping, my liver started failing and I had to have most of my small bowel removed as it died due to not receiving blood flow. One of the life altering complications of all this was the amputation of both my legs above the knees. This has been the hardest part to come to terms with. While I'm doing ok now and getting stronger each day through physical therapy and drugs there's still a long road to recovery ahead of me as well as a new way of life on the outside of my hospital bed. I hope to be discharged in the coming weeks or months. Now because of my life altering injuries my current home is no longer suitable. I have no bathroom or bedroom downstairs as well as the obvious changes needed to my kitchen, floors and anything that needs altering for me now as a permanent wheelchair user. Thankfully the County Council will provide a grant for home adaptation but it currently looks like it won't come close to covering all the costs of the extension and renovations. On top of this I will need to employ a architect and engineer to even get to build stage. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to financially pay for much of this hence the reason I'm writing and asking for help, only if you can or want to or course!Hopefully any money raised will be put towards building and renovation costs to include, builder and engineer fees, materials, ramps etc. Current renovations needed are making all floors universal so no steps or door saddles. Making all electrical light switches reachable from a wheelchair. Adapting windows so I can reach and open them. Lastly, I need to renovate my kitchen in line with build guidelines to allow me to use it from a wheelchair. For example lower counter tops I can fit under and reach, adapted appliances etc. Believe me when I say I never thought I'd be in this position but given my current needs I do need to ask for help. It is a big step for me to even tell my story let alone ask for help from my community of family and friends but desperate  times need desperate measures as they say. Thanks for reading my story. Regards,Caroline O'Neil Salem
