Hollowed Out? - Paperback pre-sale

Donation protected
Hi folks! For the past 9 months, I've been writing a book that will change the way residents of south-west Western Australia see our land. "Hollowed Out?: A story of tree-hollows, habitat loss and how nest-boxes can help wildlife in south-western Australia" gives a deep ecological insight into a simple but not well-understood phenomenon: the humble tree hollow. (See below for more info on its specs).

The book's official launch will occur in Mundaring, Perth, Western Australia, on Thursday 28th April 2022, between 8:30 am and midday, with a follow-up author talk the day after at Boya Library. But for now, I need your help!

To embark on the initial print run of paperback books, I need to raise at least $5000 to help cover printing costs. Without this, the book can't launch!

So, this crowdfund is the book's official PRE-SALE! Its RRP will be $45.00, so please donate in multiples of the RRP to pre-order your copy now. That is, for 1 x book, pledge $45, for 2 x books, pledge $90, etc.

PLEASE NOTE these costs will not cover shipping if you live outside of Perth and will not be able to:
1) attend the Book Launch on 28th April 2022 or author talk on 29th April to collect your copy/copies, or;
2) collect your copy from a Mundaring address during the first week of May 2022.

If you live OUTSIDE WA, you are more than welcome to pre-order, but the process of receiving your book will be slightly longer:
1) after the book launch, you will be sent an email with information on making a payment for postage and handling. The cost estimate is currently between $12 and $15 per book.
2) Following payment, we will mail your book to a nominated postal address, which, in this current climate, might take a couple of weeks.

For your pre-order to be successful, you MUST include a valid full name and email contact details.

THANKS folks, I'm SOOOPER excited to share this story with you! :)

ABOUT THE BOOK
This book is the culmination of more than two decades of study and photography of both natural and artificial tree-hollows, and the wild animals of Noongar Country (south-western Australia) that depend on them. It contains several interwoven stories: the nature of the region’s remarkable trees, the unique wildlife they support, and the drastic changes wrought by Europeans on Australia’s only ‘Biodiversity Hotspot’ in the past two centuries. But its nest-box narrative provides optimism for the future.

"Hollowed Out?" comprises 300 pages, features nearly 25,000 words of text and over 520 full colour, professional photographs showcasing the beauty of this unique part of Australia's natural environment. It will open your eyes to a wide world of wood and wildlife, and provide a wealth of information on how to build, install, monitor and maintain durable, pest-resistant nest-boxes that cater for a suite of backyard wildlife.

The foreword, written by Ron Johnstone, OAM, the former Curator of Ornithology at the WA Museum from 1970 - 2018, reads as follows:

"Simon Cherriman is far from a desktop naturalist. He has spent many years checking and climbing trees in search of breeding birds and other animals, observing and noting the details of their preferred nest hollows and roosts. This book provides actual facts, not myths, at a time when more and more people are realising the critical importance of habitat sustainability."
