Hoang Family Harvey Relief

Hurricane Harvey has started to clear up in our city of Houston, but the impact it had lingers for the Hoang family. 1 month prior to Harvey we happily moved into a new house with new furniture and appliances. Unfortunately the house got flooded and everything was destroyed. 

Saturday, August 26th, was a very traumatic night that we will never forget. Power went out hours before water entered the house so the flooding definitely blindsided everyone. Quickly the water rose in the house without time to elevate our belongings. As water rose we seeked shelter within the attic to escape the flood. We called 9-1-1, asked for a boat rescue, and they added us to the list. Throughout the night the storm just got worse and the water consistently rose, but nobody came. We tried to break through the roof to escape to the outside for search and rescue, but only made a small hole. Hours went by with no help so we dialed emergency services again and they informed us that they have retracted all their emergency personel because it was too dangerous at night. By the morning, about 10hrs later daylight came and still nobody. In a panic our family decided to escape the house to find a more elevated area. As a family we left the attic and went to the freezer in the garage to hollow it out and used it as a boat. This surprisingly worked and we made it to higher grounds. From there a family member was waiting for us in a truck to their house, but the truck was 2 miles away due to high waters. Though everything was lost, our survival instincts kicked in and our lives were saved.


This is image above is all that we were able to salvage from the storm. When moving into this house it took 4 trips in a giant uhaul truck, yet when cleaning out our flooded house we left with a small trailer of belongings.
