Hello, my name is Mark Schackmuth, and nearly every day, I ride a bicycle that goes nowhere.
Yet, that bicycle - my Peloton - has taken me so far.
This bike, and the community that rides alongside me, has opened my eyes to feelings, emotions, places and most importantly, people, that I would have never seen otherwise.
One of those people is affectionately known to many of us by just three letters - "HMC." Hannah Marie Corbin was, as a dear friend of mine so aptly put it, my gateway drug to Peloton.
When my bike first flickered to life, the first images shown upon its screen were of a pure, sweet and angelic woman, explaining how this magical machine worked.
This was HMC.
More so than showing me how to ride the bike, Hannah played the role of a grand storyteller. And what a story she told! From that moment onward, I knew that Peloton was much more than a bike.
It was a few days after my initial rides that I found a gathering place of fellow riders. This was the day the second part of my Peloton journey began - the day when I began to meet so many others on this very same journey.
Over the course of the last few months, I have had the pleasure to read, see, and hear so many wonderful stories of joy, determination, perserverance and love. While so many in our community have overcome significant obstacles and challenges, some remain engaged in the fight of their lives.
One such member of our community is Hannah's mother, Sharon Corbin. Sharon has been fighting congenital kidney disease for much of her life. While she has battled kidney disease for many years, recently, Sharon's prognosis has shifted. Sharon has learned that in order to survive, she needs a live kidney donor very shortly.
While the ultimate gift to Sharon Corbin will be another kidney, only one of us will make that ultimate altruistic act.
Donating an organ is the ultimate selfless act - literally giving a part of yourself to another human being - and must be taken seriously. Additionally, even a willing donor must be a qualifying match, which is determined through extensive testing and preparation. While we all await the wonderful day that courageous person steps forward, there remains much work to be done.
Living with and managing kidney disease is not only extremely exhausting and painful, but also very expensive. Costs associated with ongoing treatment and medications, as with any disease, can be very high, even with good insurance coverage. Costs of a kidney transplant average $260,000 according to a 2011 study, and this does not include non-medical expenses, such as rapid transportation in the event that a kidney becomes available.
To anyone that has read this far...I implore you, please read a little more. Below is a note Hannah posted on behalf of her mother a few months ago.
"Hi, my name is Hannah and I love my mom more than you could possibly imagine.
"Sharon Corbin is the most amazing woman you will ever have the chance to meet with a congenital kidney disease that has reached a life-threatening stage.
"My mom worked for the United States government for 30 years. She happily retired and started to volunteer with underprivileged kids in local elementary schools, dove into water aerobics classes at the local recreation center and started transitioning to a vegan way of life.
"Over the past year all of that has stopped as she is in a chronic state of severe pain and fatigue from non-stop kidney infections-she has stopped responding to available antibiotics and has HUNDREDS of kidney stones in each [barely-functioning] kidney.
"Everything that I am, I owe to my mom. Her birthday was yesterday. She doesn't need a present, she needs a live kidney donor."

Currently, Sharon Corbin is preparing to have both kidneys removed and to go on dialysis. Let us all let her know just how many warriors she has in her corner. Let us all show her the power and compassion of this community. Let us show her just how much there truly is to fight for.
