HKOCC Typhoon Mangkhut recovery

Donation protected
Super Typoon Mangkhut devastated Hong Kong on 16 September 2018, with winds of over 145mph and storm surges reaching 15ft above sea level, seriously damaging buildings, businesses and livelihoods.

During the typhoon, HKOCC lost all our equipment located at Hiwindlover on Stanley beach including all 4 of our club OC1 and OC2 training boats, the entire boat storage rack, our storage cabin, all the life jackets, and all our club paddles.

Most members lost their personal boats too.

On Hobiebeach, despite our best efforts to secure them, 4 OC6s were damaged and need to be repaired before we can get them back on the water.  For at least one canoe this means ordering parts from Hawaii.

Over the past few weekends we have been assessing the damage caused and it is substantive, with more than HKD250,000 worth of damage.

We are desperate to repair our beautiful boats, and to be back on the water training and racing as soon as we can but we need your help.

By donation an amount you are comfortable with you are helping HKOCC, the oldest Outrigger only Canoe club in Hong Kong, and our local partners, survive and thrive.

In an update to the story, my name is Andrew Mee, I am a member of the HKOCC committee, in charge of maintenance of our boats, for the upkeep of our equipment and a keen and avid paddler.

I have been paddling for HKOCC for 18 months now and during this time have competed in  many local and international races including Sydney Harbour Challenge, Takapuna and Singapore’s Ocean cup.

The money raised has allowed us to buy new paddles, fix the boat storage racks and fiberglass the 2 OC6 boats that were damaged as well as buy new parts (AMA and Iakus) from Hawaii, which are on route to us in Hong Kong and should be delivered late Janauary.

In fact one of the boats we repaired we paddled for the first time the day before the ATIR race, around Hong Kong island, to claim first place and set a new course record for the fastest time, all testament to the sheer determination to overcome the challenges our club has faced since the typhoon.

The funds have been crucial to the rebuilding of our club as without the donations we would have probably died but we we are rebuilding our club slowly, we have a the desire to continue, the will to survive and a we’re lucky to have a great bunch of people in the club who all share in the common goal.
