Ranger Tails
Ranger and Nick’s story begins 8 years ago in northern California at the Sierra Pacific Great Pyrenees Rescue. The SPGPR recently approved Nick’s adoption application and contacted him about a potential fluffy companion named Raleigh (soon to be Ranger). Raleigh was an 8-10-month-old pure breed Great Pyrenees and described as confident, sweet, stubborn, and an extreme people’s pup. In fact, he loved people so much he often jumped the 6ft high kennel enclosure at his rescue just to search for them. But on Ranger’s rescue day, or more appropriately, Nick and Ranger’s rescue day, the fence came down and these two launched into a loving alliance full of adventure and fun.

Nick has always loved big dogs, he grew up with a Great Pyrenees and the first dog of his very own was a rescue Saint Bernard named Walker Texas Ranger. Sadly, he lost is Saint at 4 years to epilepsy and knew he wanted to name his next big guy Ranger, as a tribute. But what Nick did not know was that Ranger would become his one and only heart dog. For those unfamiliar with the term, “heart dog” refers to a special dog that comes around only once in a lifetime and gifts its love in an elevated connectedness that changes everything. Crazy? Maybe. But if you’ve ever had a heart dog you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Nick recognized his “heart dog” in Ranger early on and documented all their experiences together through Instagram - @Ranger_tails (CLICK HERE). They spend nearly every moment together, living life on the road, searching for adventures at any opportunity. But tragically, their adventures have come to a halt as Ranger fights off the silent killer, Osteosarcoma (bone cancer). He was only diagnosed 3 weeks ago and in attempt to remove the cancer and eliminate Ranger’s pain, have already amputated his right front leg. Choosing to amputate and battle cancer versus ensuring your dogs comfort for the last few months of its life is an impossible decision. But although Ranger is nearly 9, Nick still decided to pursue amputation, chemo, and a new vaccine to give his great pup a fighting chance and hopefully another year or two of precious adventures together.

I've never met Nick personally, he's a close friend of a close friend. I have a heart dog and was told about their adventures and followed along a few years ago. Watching them explore and love has inspired me to be a better person and dog dad. Nick gifted his “heart dog”, Ranger, the best possible chance at beating this hell through medical treatment and unwavering support. And I want to help continue their story and make sure this chapter has as many pages as possible.

How can you help?
Follow @Ranger_tails on Instagram and show your support for the handsome big guy. I promise you’llfall in love with him and all the great dog quotes. Nick probably needs some encouraging words so say hi to him too. If you’re able to re-share their story and GoFund Me page, please do so as well! And finally, if you’re able to contribute any amount to help offset the major cost of Ranger’s beat cancer process that would be amazing! Nick has specifically requested I do not ask for the full amount, but I have still provided a breakdown of all the major procedures below.

Cost
Amputation - $3,800
Four chemotherapy sessions - $3,200
Osteosarcoma Vaccine - $3,000
