Hike with Pat and Lilly

Donation protected
The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, more commonly known as the Appalachian Trail or AT, is a continuous 2,190-mile footpath running through thirteen states from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine. Every year an estimated two million of people will hike on the AT, a few thousand of whom attempt to hike the entire trail from start to finish, a feat called thru-hiking. Only about one quarter of them are successful. In 2018, Pat and Lilly will attempt to join that select group.

We want to take the chance to spend a few months seeing life from a different perspective. To put ourselves through an experience that will push us to the very limit-physically, mentally and spiritually. To thrive with less, to appreciate more.

We also want to give something back. By donating to our campaign, you are not only helping us to achieve our dreams, but you will also help protect public lands across the country. We will be donating 25 cents from every dollar raised here to the National Parks Foundation.

Though good quality backpacking gear isn't cheap, over the past year we have acquired nearly everything we need for the trip.

However, it costs roughly $2 a mile to hike the whole AT. That's where we need YOUR HELP! There are several things that will need to be replaced during the journey. A single pair of shoes, for example, will not last 2,200 miles.

Our hike will take at least 5 months. We will use the money raised here for:
    · Food-Non-perishable, lightweight food.
·Postage-For bouncing ahead things like medication, supplies, and cold weather gear.
    ·Laundry-Backpacking can be dirty business!
·Hostels Stays-In the event of inclement weather.
    ·Gear-Replacement and repairs.
    ·The Unexpected-Because life happens.

We have been budgeting and preparing for the last year. So far we have:
   · Saved enough for our medical insurance for these next several months of unemployment.
   ·  Gone on overnight trip to test our gear and navigational skills.
   · Worked on recipes, cooking many a meal on our tiny backpacking stove.
    · Done an immense amount of research, read many books, blown through hundreds of podcasts, and Youtube videos.
    · And of course, lots and lots of hiking.

We mean it when we say that even a dollar will help, that's two packets of ramen, and a quarter to the National Parks!

"This will be the journey of a lifetime. What we take in our packs is not nearly as important as what we take within ourselves, a sense of wonder and willingness to learn and to adapt."
