Hike For Blood Bikes
Blood Bikes East (BBE) is an Emergency Medical Transport Service run & operated entirely by
volunteers. Established in 2012 BBE celebrates its 10th year in operation this year. As a registered
charity we have three main offerings:
1. Medical Transport: We offer a free out of hours delivery service under SLA for 26 hospitals
and medical facilities in the Greater Dublin area. Typically, we will carry blood samples, covid
samples, charts, X‐rays, small medical devices or even transplant related tissue samples. All
packages have an auditable “track & trace” system.
2. Human Breast Milk: Working with the National Breast Milk Bank in Enniskillen and donor
mothers across the country to support the free nationwide collection & delivery of human
breast milk to ensure babies who need it, get it.
3. Family Support: Assisting families whose children are going through life threatening
treatments (e.g., chemotherapy for leukaemia) by facilitating transport of home testing
samples to hospitals and in some cases the return of medications.
BBE operates 365 days of the year on a 100% voluntary shift‐based system that allows us to cover
7pm – 6am Monday to Friday and a 24-hour basis at the weekend from 7pm on Friday night until
6am Monday morning or Tuesday if it is a bank holiday.
We also coordinate linkups with our colleagues in the other Blood Bike groups throughout the
country to enable efficient transfers across the country.
