Hike Against Childhood Cancer

OUR MISSION

Hi! Lovely to meet you. We are Basak,  Fevziye Gul, Michelle, Karen & Aurora, five girls from all over the world who met whilst studying at Kings Education Oxford.

Since our group have all experienced the privilege of joining Oxford's international student community, we are faced with everyday reminders that there are plenty of youngsters who are not so lucky. Some face such severe health issues that they are unable to attend school normally, let alone enjoying the chance to do so abroad. Therefore, in our own small way, we are determined to make a difference. This October we are organising a Hike Against Childhood Cancer - an opportunity for students to help their peers overcome this dreadful illness with the help of established charitable support. With your help and contributions, we aim to raise awareness of the obstacles faced by children who are battling cancer in society today. All of your donations will be directly allocated to fund research and welfare projects. Your donation will help the Children with Cancer Charity to improve childhood cancer survival rates, which have already increased dramatically from 67.3% in 1990 to 85.5% in 2018! Which just goes to show - we CAN make a change!

THE HIKE

Our 10km hike will take place on Saturday, 9th October 2021. The route will start from our student accommodation block, running down alongside Oxford's picturesque waterways, across the unique 'Devil's Backbone' bridge and into nearby South Hinksey Village. We will then ascend up through a local nature reserve that will offer stunning views of the Oxford skyline, before eventually reaching our destination of Cumnor Hurst. In addition to raising money for our chosen charity, we are excited to offer our international school community with the chance to explore the English countryside for the first time, and encourage a healthy lifestyle after so many months spent primarily indoors!

OUR PERSONAL MESSAGES:

Basak Akalin: ‘As one of the most important figures in my life, my grandmother was once a fighter. Being part of this journey is providing a way for me to make full use of my abilities and push me through my limits to help children fight against this life threatening disease.’

Fevziye Gul Oruc: ‘In the past, I’ve come across many people who have been affected by cancer. While some of them triumphed, some lost the battle that would cost their lives. In this organisation, I have learned that by actively supporting research, rather than becoming overwhelmed by the sadness caused by the disease, we can all play a significant role in improving the treatments received by cancer patients worldwide.’

Michelle Pordani: ‘Fighting for such a huge cause has made me reflect on myself from a whole new perspective. Luckily, during my time in the UK I have been able to broaden my horizons in areas such as tech, research and communication skills, all of which have contributed to the development of this project. Additionally, as an A level student who is pursuing a career in Medicine, I am always conscious that the community can be doing more to help. This charity drive is essential for highlighting the importance of empathy, and I would highly encourage every single one of you to join us in this journey of giving back to the Childhood Cancer Charity in the UK.’

Karen Leung Hau Wan: ‘Sometimes I do wonder why this world can be so unfair to some. As someone who has witnessed my loved ones facing their own struggles with cancer, I clearly understand the importance and vital roles of medical professionals & carers. Although we cannot provide direct medical help, we can still contribute to the effort! By making a donation, children with cancer can be supplied with better resources and therefore a higher possibility of overcoming the struggle. It is never too late to join us and to be their shield.”

Aurora Hafidza: ‘In the spirit of Child Cancer Awareness Month, I learnt that children all across the globe are disproportionately affected by cancer. Knowing this, I am determined to make the world a better place for them. I believe that our Hike in support of Children with Cancer UK is an important first step in raising awareness for each and every childhood cancer fighter, and I hope you'd share our enthusiasm too!’

HOW DOES IT WORK?

We value each and every donation, whether it is small or large! We recognise that not everybody will be able to give the same amount, so only donate what you feel comfortable with.

All of our hikers have already pledged £10 to participate, and will be seeking the support of their many friends and relatives in their home countries to support the effort from afar! We will be offering prizes for those students who fundraise most effectively, and everyone who helps us along our way will receive our greatest thanks along with a retrospective of the hike including a writeup of the day & a series of pictures documenting our adventure.

Many thanks to everyone in advance,

Basak, Fevziye, Michelle, Karen & Aurora
