High School Sports Coaches - book project

30 Days with America's High School Coaches examines the "Hows" of high school coaching through the eyes of thirty coaches and players in 13 varsity sports. The book is divided into six sections :

1. How Coaches Relate to their Players
2. How Coaches Approach Their Craft
3. How Coaches Build Programs
4. How Coaches Improve Themselves
5. How Coaches Affect Their Communities
6. Players on Their Coaches

The subjects of this book come from across the country. Here are just some of the people you will read about.

Dave Yarema (Brother Rice High School - Michigan - Football): Yarema won a state championship at Brother Rice under legendary coach Al Fracassa. Yarema went on to a stellar career as the quarterback of the Michigan State Spartans - what many don't know, however, is how Fracassa continued to shape Yarema as a player and as an adult well after his days at Brother Rice.

Barry Wortman (Blackman High School - Tennessee - Basketball): With 500+ career victories, Wortman is a legend in Tennessee. What sets this coach apart from his peers, however, is not his collection of wins. It's his program that involves as many freshmen and sophomores who want to be involved, the character-building program that elevates teachers and school workers, and the sideline programs that create space for nonathletes who want to benefit from the mentorship that Wortman offers.

Allie Kinniard (Lancaster High School - Ohio - Field Hockey): Kinniard was tapped to resurrect a  field home team that was on the chopping block. Interestingly, Kinniard had no experience with the sport. She'd never played it. Never coached it. And for the first three years, she never won a game. Instead, she won the little battles that led the young women to begin to believe in themselves, and to create something that transcended what was happening at the moment. Any coach can shine when winning. Great coaches shine even when they aren't.

Maurice Henriques (Niwot High School - Colorado - Track and Field): As a four-year letterman in football at the University of Colorado, Henriques hit bottom when he blew up his shoulder on the last play of spring football. His coach, Bill McCartney, found just the right words. Since that time, Henriques has spent his career finding just the right words for the athletes both at Niwot and in his club program - REAL Training. Recognized by the Positive Coaching Alliance as one of the best coaches in the country, Henriques doesn't just train athletes, he "pours into kids."

Gail Maundrell (Turpin High School - Ohio - Gymnastics): The world of women's gymnastics skims the cream of the crop early and takes the best young men and away to high-pressure training centers. As a result, many high schools have dropped gymnastics, because they can't attract the "best of the best." Maundrell finds more of value in the sport than churning out Olympic champions. For her, it's about teaching young people to set goals and achieve them. One small mastered move at a time.

Michael Groves (Monterey High School - California - Baseball): Groves does everything right on the field, and he has the trophies and rings to prove it. It's what he's accomplished off the field, however, in building a one-of-its-kind-of-relationship with nearby Monterey Peninsula College that makes his story so compelling. A relationship that benefits players and non-players alike.
