My younger brother Christopher Pocock, who lives in Juliasdale, Zimbabwe, Africa, was diagnosed with a brain tumour just before Christmas 2017. It was a devastating blow to him and our entire family.
As a result of the political situation, the subsequent ruin of the economy and mass unemployment since 2000, many Zimbabweans are now scattered all over the world. Our particular family is now spread over four continents and have had to start our lives over again from scratch. For Zimbabweans still living in the country, life is a constant struggle and with the shortage of cash, a hand to mouth existence.
Chris’s only daughter Tara is getting married in the UK in July 2018 and is desperate for her father to give her away. His son Nick is in the British Army and was married in Scotland two years ago.
Chris is only 67, was a farmer and has always been involved with his local community, local farmers association, country club and helping organise activities in his area. He is a great horseman and was captain of the Zimbabwe Polo Crosse team, representing his country in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. He is a real animal and bird lover, interested in and actively involved in the preservation of wild life in Zimbabwe.
A very sociable person with a large circle of friends, he has always been the first to offer assistance to anyone in distress, putting other people’s needs, particularly those of his family, before himself.
Now it is time he was on the receiving end.
He has recently undergone a brain biopsy, CT and MRI scans in Zimbabwe. He spent a week in hospital after the biopsy on a cortisone drip to reduce the swelling in his brain which is causing debilitating headaches and affecting his vision. This has given him temporary relief. Due to his ill health he has not been able to work for a few months, so adding to the strain of his life.
As a result of these tests, he has been advised that he urgently needs minimally evasive surgery to remove the tumour and then specialised radiotherapy. These treatments are not available in Zimbabwe.
We have managed to source the best possible treatment for him in a state of the art hospital, Fortis Healthcare Limited in Gurgaon, Delhi, India.
Despite his initial pessimism, we have convinced him that with the proper medical treatment in India, not available in Africa, his chances are very good. Chris needs urgent medical treatment, without it he will die, so time is of the essence.
As a family, all born and raised in Zimbabwe, we are no longer able to fund Chris’s entire medical costs on our own. My husband Steve and I are now retired and living in England, and together with our family, will give as much as we can. We will then share this appeal with as many people as we can and ask you please to do so as well.
Chris and his partner Judy, who has been caring for him throughout his ordeal, will fly to India for his surgery. He will be in India, in hospital and as an outpatient, for one month and then return home.
A month later, he will have to fly back to the Indian hospital, as an outpatient, for specialised radiotherapy for a further four weeks.
The estimated costs for the flights, accommodation, both in hospital and as an outpatient, surgery, radiotherapy and living expenses will come to an estimated cost of £18,000 or $25,000.
If there are any excess funds after expenses I will ensure that they are donated to The Brain Tumour Charity.org. This charity is the foremost charity for brain tumour research and treatment in the UK.
Chris has so much to live for and was looking forward to walking his beloved daughter Tara down the aisle in July. Please keep this hope alive and help me to raise the necessary funds for my brother’s treatment.
