Heslop's Cancer Crusade!

Donation protected
Welcome to Heslop's Cancer Crusade!

In the spring of 1980, the Heslop family received the terrible news that Matthew, five at the time, was diagnosed with childhood leukemia. The news was shocking and devastating for our family.

Over the course of the following four years, Matt endured treatments to fight this horrible disease. This included chemotherapy, radiation, and numerous other treatments. It was a very difficult and hard time for all the Heslop's. But as we know - Matt is fighter.

In 1984, we received the tremendous news that Matt had won the war against leukemia and was in full remission.

2014 marks the 30th Anniversary of that victory against  leukemia.

Matt was treated and cared for by the good people at the Hospital for Sick Kids. With their help, support and determination they saved him. They allowed him to go on to lead a happy and healthy life for the past 30 years.

In the summer of 1983, Matt was invited to a special place, Camp Oochigeas. Camp Ooch is a summer camp that is designed for children coping with cancer.  All of their doctors, nurses and treatments have been set-up in a mobile hospital environment to allow the kids to receive therapy while at camp. It was just in its infancy at the time as Matt was one of the first campers. However, that week at Ooch had a dramatic impact on Matt and our family. It really rekindled Matt’s spirit after being sick for so long, and allowed him to be a kid again.

The Heslop's Cancer Crusade is to raise funds for these two fabulous charities, as they were instrumental in ensuring that Matt won the war against cancer.

As part of the crusade, I will be running 42.2 kms in the Honolulu marathon on December 14. I am currently training to strive for a personal best time of 3 hours and 50 minutes.  The Crusade will conclude as I cross the finish line with the hope that we have raised a large sum from all the supporters who donate.

Two challenges have been set

First, on the day we reach $5,000.00, I have agreed to shave off my salty ginger locks as a sign of support of all of the children who lose there hair during treatment.

Second, the Heslop family has agreed to match the final donation amount raised as we will be forever indebted to these two organizations for what they have done for our family.

All donations over $50 will receive a tax receipt, if requested. They will be sent in early 2015. Once you make a donation, please message me through this site if you would like one.

Please give what ever you can to the cause. Thanks in advance for your support.

With love,  the Heslop's.
