Herman J. Engel film collection

Donation protected
Our Goal: to gather the ground-breaking documentary films of Herman J. Engel,  and to make them available in digital format, free to the public.

Herman Engel's political and social commitments are expressed in "Dr. Spock and His Babies" (the Vietnam War), "Women in Prison," "Would You Cross a Picket Line?", "Impeachment," and "Grace" (about Grace Paley, noted short-storywriter, feminist, and activist).  His pioneering films "About Sex" (for teenagers), "Sex and the Health Professional" (for doctors and nurses), and "Loving Parents" (for parent groups) were hugely popular in schools, libraries, medical centers, and colleges.  And there are his art films, 'Jack Levine" and "The Clay Circus."  As well as his "Documentary!"a 2-hour history of the non fiction film.  And more!

Herman was a popular, inspiring teacher and mentor, in charge of the documentary program at N.Y.U. Graduate School of Film and Television. Many of his students are now documentary activists.

The cost of securing the original materials and digitizing them will be approximately $7,500.  This includes sonic cleaning of negatives, scans on Laser Graphic Director scanner, scans of optical and magnetic sound tracks, color correction, copying to a Hard Drive, digitization, transportation and miscellaneous costs.  This also includes the fee for a technical supervisor. Sonya Friedman (producer, Herman's widow and film partner) is contributing her services as well as office space.

We plan to present this collection of Herman's work on YouTube and other non-profit venues.

Funds are needed as soon as possible.  This will be the first time Herman's films will be collected together and available to all.  We will be most grateful for your support, in any amount.
