Henry was born born with only one full ear. His left ear did not fully develop. This condition is known as microtia/artresia. Henry’s inner ear is in working condition but because there is no opening to the canal, he can not hear on his left side.
When Henry was 3 months old we were loaned an Oticon Ponto 3 hearing aid to try. The hearing aid fixes to a band on his head and presses agains the bone behind his ear. Sound vibrations can then travel through the bone to the cochlea so Henry can hear sound. The first time we put the hearing aid on Henry, he immediately turned his head to the left to hear the specialist talking and lit up with the big smile you see in the picture. It was a pretty emotional moment for all of us.
Unfortunately this type of hearing aid is not covered by the government. We have the current hearing aid on loan until mid March. At that point we will have to purchase one if we want to continue using it. We definitely want to provide Henry with this. The difference in his reaction to sound is already unbelievable. He is a very chatty, communicative baby and we don’t want him to miss out on further development by waiting until he is old enough for surgery.
The hearing aid itself costs $4 500. Because we live in a small community, we have to travel often to London for appointments which increases our costs and means missed work for one or both of us so we rounded the total up to $5 000. Your donations will buy Henry his own hearing aid and help us afford to get him to appointments.
We will need to purchase the hearing aid by March 13th.
