Henry's flight(s) to Primary Childs

Donation protected
In early August, at just 5 weeks of age, Henry was diagnosed with Spinal Meningitis and flown via “flight for life” or air ambulance, to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City…… for the second time in his short little life.

Henry was born in Salt Lake City at nearly 5 weeks premature after my water broke and our small town hospital lacked the accommodations to safely deliver and care for both him and I. So now, for the second time in less than 5 weeks, we were packed up, strapped down and shipped out via our own private flight.

As a mother I was terrified. I brought my tiny, helpless “premature” baby to the pediatric office because he had a fever and the next thing I knew I was being told to take him to the ER for a urinalysis, blood work and a spinal tap………wait, what? A spinal tap? He is so little! Is a spinal tap necessary?

As the nurse put an IV into my itty bitty baby’s head and the Dr. told me that I should go to the waiting room while they do the spinal tap, I called my husband to let him know what was going on. Within what seemed like just minutes I was being told that the flight crew was on their way to fly us to Salt Lake City.

Everything stopped. There was nothing that I could do. My husband wasn’t there. My daughter wasn’t there. My family wasn’t there. I was scared to death. I was scared to ask, scared to ask what all of this meant.

I am very happy to say that after nearly a week at Primary Children’s, and experiencing every emotion possible, our little man was given a clean bill of health and we were sent on our way.

My husband and I both work full time jobs. I am extremely lucky to work for an organization that provides outstanding benefits but, despite those amazing benefits, in October we received on outrageous bill in the amount of $62,477.66!!!! WHAT? For a flight that took less than 2 hours.
Well, after a few phone calls, some very colorful statements and several weeks of waiting, the insurance finally cut a check for the whopping amount of $30,383.00. Don’t get me wrong, that is a TON if money but so is the $32,095.66 that we still owe.

With the help of family and a few close friends we have been able to come up with a few payments but that really doesn’t even help to put a dent in that ludicrous balance.

I am not a person that typically asks for help and I know that there are other people out there that are in need of things much more serious than we are. But none the less, I am asking for your help. We are not asking for hundreds or thousands of dollars from anyone but just $5.00 or $10.00 from thousands of people! Please share our story and help us make a few payments towards Henry’s expensive taste in travel!
