Lori's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Please help Lori and Tom Hughes. On December 20th, Lori was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital for a condition called Guillain-Barre. On Saturday morning, December 19th, she and her family were getting ready for her father's wedding when she started feeling numbness, tingling, and weakness in her arms and legs.  She was able to attend the wedding but by the next morning, she was unable to walk without assistance and she knew something was wrong.  She went to the emergency room and soon after was taken to the medical intensive care unit at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, WI. Doctors did several tests to determine that the cause of her weakness was due to a condition called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. It is a disorder in which the body's immune system starts to attack the nervous system leading to temporary paralysis and a long recovery. Most people are able to fully recover, but it can take many months to rebuild nerves and regain mobility and strength.

Lori is a passionate Math and Science teacher that goes above and beyond for her students and coworkers.  She currently leads a leadership development program and champions a science olympiad team at Nikolay Middle School in Cambridge, WI.  During her recovery she will be unable to work and will be away from her love for her students. As her health was declining, her biggest worry was that her students would be in good care. Together Lori and her husband Tom have six grown children and one very young granddaughter. Lori has a love for animals, including their two dogs, Ginger and Grace, and their cat, Maui.

To date, Lori has full paralysis and is currently being aided by machines to breathe.  Her only way to communicate is by blinking or moving her jaw to say yes. Lori's husband, Tom, has been by her side every moment. He is an over-the-road coach bus driver which demands he is away from home for extended periods of time. It is important that Tom be by her side to make medical decisions and keep her comfortable during her road to recovery. Because Lori and Tom are currently unable to work, they could use your help. Please donate what you can to help support them with medical bills and home expenses. Any amount you can give will mean the world her family and those she touches through teaching and serving in her community.
