Stacey Toi Wentland's Medical Fund

Noblesse Oblige is what we learned year after year at Maryknoll High School. According to Mary Anchor, it means that we have a “moral obligation to act with honor, kindliness and generosity.”  The Class of 1986 Spartan sisters Geralyn Camarillo, Antoinette Clarissa Bueno, Justine Young Carrico, and Celise Chung Nakakura have spearheaded this GoFundMe campaign to support our Spartan Sister, Stacey Toi Wentland.  We humbly ask for your support as Stacey triumphs over Stage 4 Cancer.  

Stacey Toi married Wayne Ivan Wentland in 2008 and a soon thereafter their adorable and energetic boys arrived.  Evan was born in 2009 and Rhys arrived in 2012.  Life was busy and full of activity.  Suddenly in 2015, she was diagnosed with cancer.  Her type of cancer was determined to be BRCA2 positive, which put her at a high risk for breast and ovarian cancer.  Five rounds of brutal chemotherapy commenced and after the fifth, they had to stop because she developed pneumonitis.  Stacey described the results of chemo as having the worst pneumonia of her life.  


Dealing with cancer was challenging while raising  a six and three year old.  In addition, being BRCA2 positive put her at a higher risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Stacey made the difficult, brave, and proactive decision to have a double mastectomy and total hysterectomy.  Despite feeling the worst she had ever felt in her life, she and her husband were optimistic even though she was pegged at Stage 2 and the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes.  Stacey eventually recovered her strength (and hair!) and went back to her extremely important role as a wife and mother.  

In May of 2017, she noticed two  lumps in her right breast.  A biopsy revealed HER2 cancer.  HER2-positive breast cancer is a type of breast cancer that tests positive for a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2).  Unfortunately, this protein is one that promotes the growth of cancer cells. Also, unlike the first time she had cancer,  she was now  experiencing pain in her right hip.  The hip bone biopsy revealed an additional site of HER2 cancer (2 lesions in right hip).  As the HER2 breast cancer spread (in her case, to the hip), she was immediately diagnosed as having Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. Recent PET scans are showing a spot on her left lung and one on her liver. 


HER2+ cancer is extremely aggressive and to deal with the distressing side effects of chemotherapy, Stacey turned to naturopathic treatments to boost her immune system and fight the fatigue and nausea that usually accompanies chemotherapy.  She reports that the side effects are much more tolerable and she is able to function and do most of the things she needs to do to raise her two young boys.  She says, “The difference is amazing.  Ivan said he sometimes loses track of when I had treatment because I’m not suffering from the side effects.” 


The Class of 1986 Spartan Sisters are launching this GoFundMe to help Stacey with expenses related to treatment, especially, the naturopathic treatment which is NOT covered by medical insurance.  Our goal is to support her with the hopes of helping her to continue caring for her family.   We want Stacey to be healthy so that she may  enjoy going to the beach with her boys, continue reading, cooking, and of course, watching her favorite TV show, Game of Thrones.
