Help Remedios!

I was heartbroken this weekend to hear that my family’s housekeeper of over two decades has been jailed for the last three weeks after a car accident. She was not at fault, but nonetheless was detained by ICE agents on suspicion that she was illegal, and after being unable to produce the necessary paperwork, was thrown in jail with no clear end in sight. She’s been denied all the constitutional protections we all take for granted - there was no suspicion of wrongdoing, no previous criminal history, no detainable crime TO BEGIN WITH... just the papers.
 

She has 5 kids (all American citizens) who all depend on her – the oldest is graduating in two weeks, and the youngest is very sick and needs her mom by her side. This is a family that exemplifies everything it means to be American: they work harder than anyone I know, they’re deeply committed to their church and their community and have one of the tightest, most loving families I’ve ever met…and have been like a part of our family since as long as I can remember.


 I don’t know what to do to help Remedios, other than setting up this GoFundMe to help her get this all sorted out and go back to her family. So, if you’re like me, wondering how you might stand up against this abomination of democracy, here’s a good start. No amount is too little!


All money donated will go directly to helping Remedios (lawyer fees, legal expenses, lost wages etc.) and helping to ensure she is able to stay in the country with her family.
