*UPDATE* I have a confirmed flight leaving JFK and landing in San Juan Friday evening (10/6/17).
I am allowed up to three pieces of luggage of up to 100 pounds. I will be picking up donations and purchasing necessities in the NYC area today, Wed (10/4), Thurs (10/5), and Friday (10/6).
We did not meet our donation goal of $2k yet, and will be making adjustments to our approach.
We are dedicated to supporting our kids and families for the longhaul, just as we were before the storm, and especially after. Three families are still displaced.
**UPDATE** As of this morning (10/2/17), SMPL will be offering a half day of classes taught by volunteers for kids aged 5 to 14. No kid will be turned away, whether they were previously a part of SMPL or not. Classes will meet outside in Old San Juan.
Over the weekend, we received monetary donations from supporters and also a donation of one generator or solar panel from our friends in the Sustainable Food Actions Puerto Rico group.
My name is Erika Smith, and I volunteer with Sin Mirar Pa’l La’o, a youth-serving nonprofit organization in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
We are seeking monetary donations to meet the needs of its 20 participating families, three of which have lost their homes and are currently living in refuges. I have been communicating with the director of the organization, Kelly Demazy, who is in Puerto Rico now. She has been helping with FEMA paperwork and providing essentials like baby food, headlamps, and feminine hygiene products using her own money. This is not sustainable, and we need your help.
By donating here, you are directly helping Puerto Ricans without political red tape.
We are sending in some items with a friend on a commercial flight Saturday morning (9/30/17). Some essential items can still be purchased on the island. I can fly in other items on a commercial flight. With your donation, we can immediately begin to meet needs independent of political red tape. Even a small donation today makes a huge difference as stores are slowly running out of essential items like food and water.

We will use the money for the following items and for a roundtrip plane ticket to the San Juan.
· Water filters and water
*update we expect to have two 6 liter water filter bottles available to the group on Saturday (9/30) or Sunday (10/1). We can use these for our daily school activities beginning Monday Oct 2. We have a long way to go to provide each family with their own water filter.
· Hygiene products (feminine hygiene products, solar
showers, cleaners, etc.)
· Batteries for flashlights (AA, AAA) and headlamps. Solar powered battery chargers.
· Food for families and for the half day of school we
will begin offering on Monday October 2, 2017
· Solar panels or ideally a WAGAN Solar e Power
Cube 1500 Plus (these items can be flown in on a
commercial flight)
· Generator (smaller generators can also be flown in
on a commercial flight)
· Candles
· Education materials (books, manipulatives, tablets,
etc. for ages 5 to 14)
We will use excess funds to restore SMPL activities including:
· Half day of alternative classes for SMPL kids and any others.
None will be turned away.
· Technology-focused winter camp that was already
scheduled to begin in December
· We have strong ties to the community and anticipate
using excess funds to provide, nonSMPL community
members with similar essential items.

By now, many of you have heard about the humanitarian crisis currently underway on the island of Puerto Rico. Citizens do not have access to water, electricity, cleaning supplies, hygiene products, and other essential items such as food. The outpouring of love from the mainland United States, other islands, and the Puerto Rican diaspora has been huge. Unfortunately, most of those items have not made it to the hands of the people who need them, as packages are undeliverable and government aid has not been dispersed effectively.
Help us to QUICKLY provide our families with what they need and ensure our community comes back from this disaster stronger than ever. Your donations put essential items that we hardly think about directly into the hands and homes of those who need them.

The goal of Sin Mirar Pa'l La'o is to give privilege to those who do not have it. It is materialized through workshops, individualized activities, excursions and cultural activities that allow them to develop. At the same time, we offer emotional support for psychological counseling programs.
