My mom has struggled with addiction for most of my life. Addiction has a way of trapping you in a repetitious cycle that you simply cannot get out of, even with the most supportive people on your side. As supportive as I’ve tried to be I cannot help but lose more pieces of my mom along the way.
At this point in time my mom has lost everything but a suitcase of personal belongings. Addiction has killed off most of her vital relationships, friendships, has seized apartments, cars and multiple storage units full of our entire life worth of memories.
In November of 2015 I received a frantic phone call from my Aunt. I walked into the hospital room to see my mom having her breath and essentially her life - pumped for her. She had taken too much of something, again, and this time it had caused massive inflammation to her heart and an aggressive psychosis. At that moment, I realized just how quickly you could lose a parent and how at risk her life truly was and still is.
My mom recently completed a 30 day rehabilitation program and is in a halfway house in Philadelphia where the cost of weekly rent is quickly adding up. She is unemployed and in need of a total hip replacement, leaving her disabled until she is able to have that taken care of. With the looming risk of homelessness and my mother's health - the cry for help is larger than ever.
I have tried over the years to help the best I could, even while suffering from a chronic health condition, undergoing multiple surgeries, and being away at college for some of the time. But, unable to currently help my mom claw her way out of the negatives, I am here peeling away my pride and seeking as much help as humanly possible. I am not one to ask for charity, but I am unsure of where else to turn.
Anyone who knows my mom knows that she is a goofball with a massive heart who can make anyone around her laugh. With your help she can remain in a safe and structured environment in order to thrive and live a recovery oriented lifestyle when she gets out. At this point I am desperately trying to help her be able to stand on her own two feet so that now, at 27, I can have the kind of relationship with her that I’ve lost out on for so long.
Since we have surpassed my original goal of 6 months (thank you all) my new goal is to raise enough to cover 12 months of rent for her. Any additional amount helps to cover the cost of food and other small personal necessities so my mom can focus on her sobriety.
All funds will be allocated by me, personally.
