Help Laboni Survive Her Battle With Leukemia!

Donation protected
This fundraiser has been created for Hosneara Laboni, by her sister-in-law Laila Talukder, from Melbourne, Australia, with the support of  a team of family friends and her cousin.

A loving mother, a devoted wife, and a caring daughter and sister, Laboni is admired by all who know her, for her beautiful smile and benevolent heart. Her life is dedicated to her family, supporting her husband and the upbringing of her two lovely daughters, Hridi (18) and Raya (9). She has been hardworking, happy and content being the centrepiece of this wonderful family. But alas, at the age of only 43, her world has suddenly been shattered by an aggressive form of Leukemia!

Like many, Laboni hesitated to visit her doctor for mild symptoms of fatigue, weakness and low-grade fever during the last one year due to the spread of COVID. It was only in mid-January this year, when lumps appeared in her neck and abdomen that she got tested. The routine investigation results were alarming, highly suggestive of leukemia and she was immediately referred to a specialist. Further tests revealed the shocking news- she was attacked by the rare and aggressive T-cell Prolymphocytic Leukemia (T-PLL).

Chemotherapy was started without delay but she did not respond. With treatment options limited in Bangladesh, where she resides, she was taken to India last month. She is currently under the care of renowned oncologist Dr Suresh Advani in Mumbai.

The recommended treatment for her condition is to start with the monoclonal antibody, Alemtuzumab, a highly potent but extremely expensive drug. If she responds satisfactorily to this, stem-cell transplant can be considered.

We have been advised that a course of Alemtuzumab will cost over 1.2 million AUD, with each dose of the drug costing a staggering $36000 AUD. This is obviously a mammoth amount and virtually impossible for a middle-class family to afford. Her family is exploring every avenue they can to try and organize as much funds as they can so that she can at least start the treatment.

At present, she is being treated with a different monoclonal antibody as a last-ditch effort in the absence of funds, but she is not responding and her condition is deteriorating. According to her doctor, without Alemtuzumab there isn’t much else he can suggest, and she may need to consider returning home.

The defeat in Laboni’s eyes and anguish amongst her family have made us decide to step-up our efforts to do whatever we can to help her fight this battle and bring her smile back.

Laboni’s brother, known to many by his Facebook name, Jaedi Sajib, who also resides in Australia, himself has helped countless members of the community through his charitable endeavours for more than a decade. Many of their friends and extended family have reached out after hearing the news and offered their support. It is indeed an agonizing time for Laboni, her family and anyone she has blessed with her kindness and love.

We, as Laboni's family and  friends, feel it is the least we could do by coming together and organizing this fund-raising effort. We are starting with a target of $150,000, to cover the costs of the first few doses of the drug Alemtuzumab. All funds raised will be withdrawn to a joint account of Laila and Jaedi, so that Jaedi, who is caring for Laboni in India will have direct access to it.

Please donate as generously as you can, and help spread the appeal to others. Tiny drops make an ocean, and any contribution, however small, will help to keep our hope to see Laboni survive this ordeal and live happily with her family.
