Helping the Rutherfords

Donation protected
Keith and Ashley Rutherford welcomed their second son, Brooks, to this world in March. Brooks was born with a severe complete bilateral cleft lip and palate. Ashley had to take a leave of absence from work until after Brooks's third surgery, which is scheduled for the first of the year.

The Rutherfords had built a comfortable life with their modest income. Suddenly faced with a $2,000 a month reduction in income while Ashley took her leave of absence, Keith, who is a police officer, tried picking up the slack by working extra jobs, volunteering for overtime when he could, and even picked up a part time job with a pressure washing company. He worked everyday.

The Rutherfords weren't doing great, but they were treading water. Six weeks ago, Keith was injured in the line of duty. He dislocated his right knee, tearing the cartilage around the knee cap and the meniscus. Workman's Comp took a long time scheduling his surgery, and he just had surgery last week. He is facing an eight week recovery before he can return to work.

The Workman's Comp income is based on his pay without overtime, extra jobs, or side work. He has taken quite a pay cut, and his wife still cannot return to work due to their son needing attention as he endures and recovers from his surgeries.

Keith contacted his mortgage company and VA but the approval for a financial hardship takes so long that they could lose the house before it is approved. They filed for a financial hardship through their bank and were denied.

The Rutherfords have cut any extra expenses they can, but they are still behind. Keith says, "I'm afraid we won't be able to afford the co-pay for my son's next surgery. I am at the end of my rope and I am desperate. I have always helped others when in need, and now I can't get any help. I don't want my family homeless."

Keith and his family need a hand up. Let's give it to them.
