HELPING THE CAMPBELL-MOSOLF FAMILY RISE AGAIN

Donation protected
In the wee hours of the morning on Saturday, September 26th, Brenda Mosolf was awoken by the shrill screeching of a smoke alarm.  Disoriented, she walked out of her bedroom to see smoke billowing from the top of the French doors to the front of the house.

Brenda began frantically yelling “THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE!” to her parents, Larry and Cathy Campbell, who were sleeping upstairs.

Jolted awake, Cathy quickly ran downstairs to see what Brenda was yelling about. The hissing sounds of flames amidst the billows of smoke filled the atmosphere. Within minutes, the family’s two story home on West Hill was fully engulfed in flames.

Brenda tried to rescue her daughter Ana’s dog Gingy. While she could hear her in the bedroom, the smoke was so thick Brenda had to get out to save herself.  Bella, Brenda's mini pom-maltice, was only found and saved because she brushed against Brenda's leg as she got out of the house.

Mother and daughter screamed in desperation for Larry and Lizzie the Labrador who were still inside. Luckily Anthony and Ana were not home at the time of the fire.

As windows cracked and burning embers fell to the ground, brave firefighters arrived on scene from Elmira, West Elmira, Golden Glow, Pine City, Big Flats, Horseheads, Town and Country, Elmira Heights, Southport and Baldwin Fire Departments to put the fire out. Plumes of black smoke and balls of angry fire filled the early morning sky, as the first responders fought back with all of their resources.

Five hours later, amongst the black soot and charred remains of their belongings, Larry Campbell was found deceased, his faithful Lizzie near him.

In shock, the brave family clung together as they faced the reality of the grave situation; not only had their beloved Larry and pets not escaped the fire, they had lost everything they ever worked for in life.

The Red Cross provided a one night hotel stay for Brenda and Anthony; friends and family have been paying for additional nights at a local hotel for them while recovery options are identified. Cathy is staying with Larry’s son Andy and his family.

On Sunday, Brenda, Ana, and Anthony returned to the scene and were able to recover few family heirlooms and a handful of charred photographs. The intense heat from the blaze melted parts of Brenda’s vehicles, leaving her with no usable transportation. Luckily the garages that house Larry’s beloved classic cars stayed free from fire. The only other item left unscathed was a wooden sunflower lawn ornament, a sign of hope left standing in a circle of charred memories, burned beyond recognition.

A sign of hope. That hope is you.
