It’s been just over 10 months since this little guy -our Lewis - underwent open heart surgery, following a sudden cardiac arrest near the Altona foreshore. Fortunately for us, on this life changing day, we were right by his side carrying a portable defibrillator in our backpack, and (although terrified!) were able to bring him back to life.
We are so grateful to many, to the doctors who treat Lewis and advised us so wisely, to our dear friend Sally who helped raise funds 18 months ago so we could purchase 2 defibrillators, and to Sue from DeFib for Life for her generous support and all the work she does to help families like ours.
Lewis may not be able to participate in sporting activities he loves anymore, or even run around the playground with his friends, but that hasn’t stopped his love of life, his beautiful cheeky sense of humour or his amazing generous spirit. He gives us courage, inspiration and determination to be our best, and we are so proud of him!
In October 2019, at an RCH check up for our youngest Jasper (6yrs) we were told his septal thickness was 19mm (almost twice the adult average), and given our family history the risk of a cardiac arrest was too high. Over Xmas last year, he too underwent the same open heart surgery To place an internal cardio defibrillator. It was a difficult time, but far tougher to now explain to a 7yo his lifetime restrictions, when all he wants to do is be like his friends and run, jump, swim, and be normal.. unfortunately for him that will never be the way.
My wish is to give other families, living with the daily stress of a child with a serious heart condition, the comfort of being as prepared as we were. Of the 30,000 sudden cardiac arrests each year, only 15% survive. We were so fortunate to be one of the lucky ones!
Although my 70-day no alcohol challenge is long now over, I want to keep this page alive, I want to continue to advocate, to push, to raise awareness, and most importantly I want to help other families.
