Helping Diesel and Helping others

Diesel is a 7yr old lab border collie mix that I have owned since birth! He's been perfect since day one and has always been a good boy. Since having him in my life he's been everything to me. He's my child, my boyfriend lovingly took to him like he's been his own since day one. He's shown our two other dogs the ropes as they were still young when we rescued them. He's as close to perfect as you can get.

Diesel's story: On October 1st 2017 around 2pm Diesel was admitted to Metro Animal Emergency Clinic. He was being treated for leptospirosis a bacterial infection that can come from wildlife and could potentially kill him. In the days before Diesel being admitted it seemed as though he had the flu. It wasn't until Sunday morning his eyes, lips and ears were jaundice; this definitely wasn't a flu bug and we rushed straight to the emergency clinic! That night we got a scary phone call saying he still hadn't peed, and if he doesn't show his kidneys are working soon it means the leptospirosis him hard with a high possibility of losing him. The veterinarians were worried, and I was in distress for the fear of losing my best friend. Around 10pm I called to check in to see how Diesel was doing, still no pee. I offered to go in and see if he would pee, still nothing. Around 3am one of the brilliant veterinaries had suggested we put a catheter in so they could monitor if his kidneys are producing urine. I left so they could get him set up and stayed close in the area as we live 30 minutes away. On Monday morning I checked in again and he still hasn't produced very much urine and Diesel was still in critical condition.

As the week progressed Diesel gradually improved. October 4th we did blood work his creatinine levels were over 900 his BUN levels weren't reading and neither was his phosphorus levels. October 6th blood work was rechecked and his creatinine levels were 524, his BUN levels were still too high to read, and his phosphorus level were still high but had improved. October 7th blood work shows Diesel’s creatinine levels down to 377, his BUN level reading 45.2, and his phosphorus level at 2.63 . He was improving but still was not eating. Blood work was to be redone in 24 hours. October 8th blood work resulted in creatinine level is 280, his BUN level was 32, and his phosphorous level was 1.98.
* All these blood tests are to measure how his kidneys were working as he was still jaundice but he was producing urine but we needed to make sure no other underlying issues were going on*
Creatinine levels- This test reveals kidney function and helps distinguish between kidney and non-kidney causes of elevated BUN
BUN levels - Blood urea nitrogen: This test determines kidney function. An increased level is called azotemia and can be caused by kidney, liver and heart disease as well as urethral obstruction, shock or dehydration
Phosphorus levels - Elevations in this test are often associated with kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and bleeding disorders
Everything was improving except his appetite; we needed him to eat so he could come home! Every day we brought something new, we tried everything to restore his appetite. We tried nuggets, burgers, fries, capelin, chicken hearts, beef lung, beef liver, fish treats, every kind of soft food, chicken and rice. Nothing worked and poor Diesel would eat very little.

One week in hospital and the wonderful ladies and gentlemen at Metro Animal Hospital got him to eat cans of food! Monday October 9th around 9am I got the call we could come get him! I was in shock, I could not move and was mentally prepared for him to stay longer. Picking him up Monday was emotional, there was one particular staff member who was always smiling every day we were there! She was amazing and she happened to be the one to discharge Diesel, we locked eyes in the waiting room and we both just smiled we ended up in tears by the end of it (happy tears of course). Every day we visited once, twice sometimes three times a day. The wonderful staff helped us graciously, accepting my many calls and questions. Every time I just walked in and they knew who I was there to see. My amazing employers and coworkers were amazing during this time allowing me to have time off and helping any way they can.

Diesel's bill is totaled at $5921.45

Any donations will not only help pay for his bill, but also help pay for other dogs affected by this very contagious disease. If it wasn't for the wonderful people in our lives Diesel wouldn't be home with us today!
Update: Diesel is now doing very good at home. He is eating a little bit more each day. He still needs to have more blood work done. He is currently on antibiotics for the next two weeks along with a pill to increase his appetite. His blood work will tell us if there's the need for any more tests but we are hopeful for a full recovery.
