HELP HARLEY HEAL AFTER BRAIN DAMAGE

Harley was born perfectly normal + healthy on 3/27/20 but unfortunately, due to negligence and incompetence of our midwife, he experienced brain damage just two days after because of toxic jaundice that was not treated in a timely matter. I will spare the details, for now, of how his care was neglected and how this could have easily been prevented. But it’s most important for people to know that— YES, JAUNDICE CAN CAUSE BRAIN DAMAGE. Unfortunately, my sons brain was already damaged by the time i took him to the ER which was just a few short hours after being told “wait it out until tomorrow & see how he does..” that he was arching his back & crying inconsolably. The damage had been done. 

What started with elevated bilirubinemia aka jaundice , led to Kernicterus , which is a (rare & easily preventable) form of brain damage that damages the basal ganglia part of the brain which is responsible for telling your body how to move.

Because of this damage to his brain he now experiences:

+ Cerebral Palsy — cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems using the muscles.

+ Dystonia — involuntary muscle contractions

+ Truncal Hypotonia — lack of muscle tone in his neck/trunk area (floppy, weak)

+ Hypertonia — high muscle tone in extremities (stiff, hard to move)

+ AudioNeuropathy — a form of hearing loss where sound comes in but gets distorted and hard to interpret

+ Cortical Vision Impairment — or delayed maturation of eyes

+ Failure To Thrive because of his slow weight gain due to the high amount of calories he’s burning constantly

Harley is now almost 3 years old and has not reached any major milestones. No rolling, no crawling, no sitting up, no walking, no talking, and still building his head control. He is globally delayed and currently in physical therapy 2x a week, speech therapy 2x a week and chiropractic care 2x a month. Above all, Harley is loved, happy and smiles on a daily. He is determined, a fighter, and warriors through everyday with perseverance.

Although this was a clear case of negligence, our legal case got denied because the said midwife doesn’t have liability insurance or the money to cover the lifetime of expenses for Harley’s needs. Now we are left to do everything in our power to raise money for Harley so he can get all of the therapies and treatments he needs and deserves. Years 0-3 being the most important for child development and what our current focus is— although he is expected to need a lifetime of care.
