Help for Kail

My beautiful daughter Kail is now 4 years old. She is a picture of happiness. She loves singing and dancing. You can see her running around and jumping on beds.  She is also very inquisitive and excited to learn. Kail would ask questions which will make you ponder. She has remarks that will get you laughing. You will not see on her face that she has any medical problem. We hope and pray to God that that this will last, but, unless she has surgery it might not be so.

When Kail was born, she was barely above 4lbs. We also noticed that her head is always leaning on her right. Local doctors from our area diagnosed her with torticollis or tightening of the neck muscles. She underwent therapy for three (3) months but with no improvement on the posture of her neck. We decided to have her checked up in the city and she underwent a series of tests. At six (6) months old, she was diagnosed with Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome because of congenital scoliosis. It is a condition where, because of her scoliosis, the ribcage is constricted that her lung has no space to expand. Our Spine Surgeon, told us that if this is not treated, as she grows she will have difficulty breathing and will likely need to constantly be connected to an oxygen tank.

The treatment Kail needs will be a surgery called a modified expansion thoracoplasty. Her treatment will also need Serial Lengthening procedure, where the device is lengthened every 6 months while her spine grows. Right now, Kail is using mostly only her left lung as her right lung is already compromised by the 89 degree curvature of her spine. Fortunately, she is yet to experience shortness of breath or any pain from her scoliosis.

She is scheduled for surgery this December; depending on the result of her final medical clearance (her tests results might indicate a need for an earlier surgery). The cost of the treatment is, as estimated by our spine surgeon, from PhP900,000 to PhP1,100,000 (CAD 22,500 to CAD27,500) including hospital stay, doctors’ fees, implant, and etc. If all goes well, a team of doctors will carry out the treatment to help give Kail a chance of a normal life.
