Hello!
We are Luís Rigotto’s family, based in Brazil, and we are creating this crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for his Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) treatment.
- About AMD
Age-Related Macular Degeneration is a disease that causes central vision loss, starting with minor distortions and progressing to complete loss of central vision. In Luís’ case, this condition developed due to prolonged use of benzetacil (a strong antibiotic) necessary for a treatment during his youth, resulting in the accumulation of proteins and fats under the retina cells in both eyes, known as drusen. The disease has progressed rapidly in recent months, making day-to-day life increasingly challenging.
- Diagnosis
Luís received the diagnosis from two specialized clinics. Initially, it was believed that no treatment was available due to the rarity of the disease. However, the second clinic offered an advanced treatment called Valeda (explained in the video at the end of this text), which has recently become available in Brazil. Valeda has the potential to slow down the disease progression and restore some clarity to Luís’ significantly impaired vision.
- Treatment
The treatment at Retina Clinic in São Paulo costs R$ 9,000. Since we don’t have health insurance, the full amount must be paid out of pocket. The treatment spans three months, with multiple weekly sessions. Additionally, as we live far from the clinic (250km away), we anticipate spending at least an additional R$ 3,000 on transportation, accommodation, and meals during this period. Hence, the crowdfunding goal is set at R$ 12,000, roughly £ 2.000.
- Post-Treatment
This treatment is the first step of a journey. If Luís responds well during the initial 3 months, it may be necessary to continue with additional sessions afterward (which would increase the cost). We are confident that this initial step will improve his quality of life and help slow down the progression of the disease. However, we need assistance because we have no savings, and our income is already fully committed.
