WHO WE ARE:

Inspired by OlaRonke Akinmowo’s The Free Black Women's Library in Brooklyn, New York, The Free Black Women’s Library - Los Angeles is a free, feminist pop-up library and book swap that centers black women authors.

WHAT WE DO:

The Free Black Women’s Library - Los Angeles uplifts and amplifies the voices of black women writers across the diaspora through literature and community trading. We provide a unique, free, and accessible space for community members of all races, ages, and gender identities to trade, engage, and swap books by black women authors for one in our library. Our goal is to host our first pop-up library in June of this year.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Before we can officially launch our library, we’re aiming to gather #300blackwomenbooks by June 2019 and we need supplies to get the job done.  We believe in full transparency and accountability & will post the items we purchased for the library with your donations to this account, as well as our social media accounts.

Our team of volunteers will be responsible for clearing, sorting through, and managing the contents of the drop boxes and P.O. boxes weekly, as well as installing and guiding folks through the pop-up library experience at various locations.

We have contacted local, small businesses to host donation drop boxes for community members to conveniently place their book donations in and would also like to have a mailing address for our supporters to also mail their donations to. It is our hope that we can build a traveling, sustainable community library that is truly for the people, by the people, continuing the legacy OlaRonke Akinmowo created for us.

For more ways to support the legacy, we encourage you to become a patron  to our mother organization, The Free Black Women's Library, based in Brooklyn, NY to further more free, black feminist, intersectional, and literary arts-based programming.

We appreciate any and all support of The Free Black Women’s Library - Los Angeles.  If you're unable to support monetarily, we understand. We would love if you could share this link or any of our social media account pages with your online community to help spread the word.

For more information, please e-mail us at [email redacted]  , follow along with us as we grow, and check out some of the beautiful donations we've already received!
