Help Us Help Sue

In 2016 all of our lives changed as we received the devastating news that our “Sweet Sue” was diagnosed with Breast Cancer that had already spread to her bones, it’s been 5 years since then and we are so proud of Sue for her battle that she’s fought with a smile on her face. We call her “Sweet Sue” for a reason and everyone that knows her knows why. Ever sinceshe was a little girl Sue has always gone out of her way to give. To this day Sue still can’t accept things from people but will give everything she has. When Sue got sick, all the people she had helped over the years tried to give her money but she gave it back. They then had to drop cash at her door which she thenwent out of her way to try to find out who it was from and return.  When this didn’t work, a kind person tried to start a go fund me page for Sue with all her medical bills piling up while she was unable to work.  She found out about it, had it cancelled, and returned all the money.  Sueand her husband Donny have both been so giving their whole lives.  They are two of the kindest people on earth and have been together since Junior High School. Their love story has only grown deeper over the years.  Don has taken care of Sue so well through her sickness, and in 2019 while Sue was sick and Donny was taking care of her at home, he had a heart attack and flatlined. Sue performed CPR and saved his life, taking care of him while he was sick.  They have always gone back and forth caring for each other.

Over the past 5 years Sue has persevered through numerous treatments and trials in her fight against cancer, and on several occasions after completion, was advised and was accepted to new trials to continue her efforts in the hope for better results. Sue showed nothing but gratitude to her Doctors and all who rallied around her, often with her reassuring confidence that she would be alright and if she could do it, YOU could do it.

Sue’s cancer caused her to put aside her career as a canteen truck driver after 35+ years, but even then, she didn’t let that stop her from working as she helped at the commissary during her treatments. Unfortunately, when the pandemic came, Sue’s immune system became a top priority and there was no alternative except for Sue to stop working at the commissary that she was a part of for many years. This of course would prove to be a difficult time for her, not seeing so many people who have always been a part of her daily regimen.

In summer 2020, sadly, Sue & Donny received the news that Sue’s cancer had spread to her brain and would require brain surgery. As always, with a heart full of hope and bravery Sue came through her surgery with “gratitude” & “attitude” behaving like her usual warrior self.

When she returned home, as a few weeks passed, we began to see some improvement and our hopes were high again. In December, as the holidays grew closer, our Sue once again, started growing further away again.  In just a few weeks, her mental health started to deteriorate and once again, we were deeply concerned, and it was also clear that even Sue was becoming fearful of the way she was starting to feel.

On January 15, Donny knew there was no choice but to bring Sue back to Mass General. Her setback progressed to constant confusion, fear, sadness, and guilt (all symptoms of this debilitating form of cancer).

After the one-week hospital stay, it was decided that there is nothing more that can be done for our Sue other than Hospice.  I think if Sue wereable to communicate clearly from her hospital bed, the only thing she would want to say is “take me home!”

On January 24, Sue arrived home by ambulance and it is wonderful to have her home! Every effort has been made to keep her surroundings as familiar to her as possible, however there is still so much to do so that this can truly be her “Happy Place.”

As there are so many blessings in this home, with the layout of the home, we are faced with so many challenges to keep her comfortable

Sue requires 24-hour care, something insurance would never even consider. Due to Covid-19, our “bubble” of caretakers needs to remain small. Not one of us can afford a moment of illness at this time. Our family has no choice but to put our careers to the side for now so that we can care for Sue and give her all the care and the dignity she deserves. With mounting medical care and prescription drug coverage, even after the high medical premium they pay themselves each month, they find themselves in the mostuncomfortable territory our family could ever imagine, and we are asking for your help.

If you could find it in your heart to give a little something to someone who has always given all of herself to everyone else.

We thank you in advance for any gift you are able to give. Blessings to all of you from our family to yours.
