Help us find out what's wrong with Lou!

12/18 update: a student from Internal Medicine from ISU called and said Lou's fever went down as of this morning. He reacted well to his transfusion and I should get the results when the doctor calls me today. Yesterday they were considering putting a bone marrow biopsy into the diagnostic plan. I will chat with the doctor today to see if this is still the case. We are hoping if we have to do it, they can find some answers. It is a very invasive and costly test but they hope for high yielding results. Meet Lou! Lou is a 5 month old German Shorthair Pointer. We got him from a farm in Iowa  3 days after we got home from our honeymoon. We have no kids so Lou is our baby! A few weeks ago we noticed Lou wasn't acting like himself so we took him to our local vet. They found out that he was severely anemic and needed a blood transfusion so they transfered us to another vet in the area that had blood on hand. Lou had his transfusion and his levels didn't improve like they were supposed to so he was sent to an Emergency Animal Center for overnight observation. The next morning he was taken back to our local vet and his numbers had dropped again. They also did a scan and found a piece of metal in his belly. He was sent to the animal hospital (Kimberly Crest) to get another transfusion and get it removed. They removed it and his levels started to rise - great news, problem solved! Not quite..Lou had his endoscopy on the 12th, got his levels checked on the 13th (looked good), came back to get them checked again on the 16th and they dropped 8%. The vets in the area are baffled as to what is going on and have referred us to Iowa State University.  Lou and I arrived today (17th) at ISU to discover they were baffled as well. Luckily they have the equipment/personnel to do further testing. Bad news is the cost is tremendous. We have just about hit our financial maxium to figure out what is going on with Lou. We have taken out a loan and will have it maxed out after tonight's stay at the hospital. We are asking for the funds to help further diagnosis our little buddy until they find out what is going on! Without these funds we will not be able to do any further testing and he will be sent home and we will have to hope for the best with no answers as to why his blood levels continue to drop.
