Help Travis Beat Genetic Heart Disease

Donation protected
It's not often that a 28 year old, otherwise healthy person is diagnosed with heart failure. But that's the diagnosis Travis Wesser received this past January after experiencing sudden, debilitating symptoms.

Travis has been given only 5 years before his heart will completely shut down. If he's able to access the right [expensive] medical care, he can extend the life of his heart by up to 20 years, which buys him more time to find a donor for his eventual heart transplant. He's already on the waiting list... but who knows how long it will be before he'll find a donor.

But here's the kicker.  Unlike many 28 year olds, Travis doesn't have the family support to help him handle the emotional toll, physical limitations, and medical bills of his diagnosis because he's gay, and in a loving relationship with his wonderfully supportive boyfriend, Topher. LBGT people are commonly shamed and cut off from the people they need the most, and that has life and death consequences for someone with a diagnosis like Travis'.

Travis and Topher do their best to support each other, but after Travis' condition continued to deteriorate, Travis has been unable to work enough hours -- just enough to hold on to his health insurance for as long as he can. His doctor has advised him to apply for disability benefits, which he has done, but the process will take 4-6 to finalize. Possibly longer with COVID slowing down government agencies.

Without paying the necessary copays, hospital bills, and surgery costs NOW, Travis won't get the care he needs to beat heart disease.

The clock is ticking for Travis, but your help can make all the difference in the world. All donations received will go towards paying current and future medical bills to keep Travis healthy until he's able to get proper support through disability and medicaid.

Documentation and Medical Details

Here is a record of Travis' initial diagnosis from January:

His medical bills thus far:

As part of his diagnosis and treatment, Travis experiences extreme fluid retention and swelling that is resistant to prescription diuretics.

Travis has gained 20 pounds of water weight from all the fluid retention that must be removed through a process called an Abdominal Tap. That procedure alone will cost him another $1,265.

Information about the procedure can be found here: https://www.healthline.com/health/abdominal-tap

In order to remain accountable to everyone here, Travis will continue to provide updates on his disability claim as time goes on. For now, he has the play the waiting game.
