Help Tona and Casa Lupita

Donation protected
We found Tona laying in the hot sun on the street in Granada, Nicaragua. While Granada, like many places in Nicaragua has a significant problem with stray dogs, Tona was different.

Barely able to walk, Tona had withered down to skin and bones due to a large rectal hernia which has prevented him from passing any stool. Tona was clearly in a lot of pain and needed medical attention.

We made some phone calls and Casa Lupita, a non-profit veterinary clinic in Granada, agreed to see him the day we found him - we only had to get him there. It was just a 15 minute walk.

After hours of trying to coax Tona to walk with us with chicken and water, things were looking pretty bleak. But, with some help from some locals, we were able to get Tona into a cart pulled by a horse to transfer him Casa Lupita.

The vets and vet technicians at Casa Lupita examined Tona and determined he needed to have 2 surgeries and have taken him into their care until they are able to perform them. Tona needs to spend 5 days on stool softeners and have an enema, amongst other things, in order to prepare him for surgery.

Casa Lupita has also advised that they will neuter him and provide a few days of post-operative care.

Even with all of this, Tona will still have a long way to go. He will need food, lots of care, and a forever home. After speaking with the vet, his recommendation is that we try to find him a home in Granada. Tona has come accustomed to the environment here and it will be very hard on him to transfer him any long distance.

If we cannot find a home for Tona, the staff at Casa Lupita have experience with transferring animals across borders. This is very expensive, and there are a number of hurdles that must be overcome in order for it to be an option. While we really hope we will be able to find him a home in Nicaragua, we have not ruled out bringing him to Canada, or possibly transferring him to a forever home in a warmer climate.

So why are we raising money? We are raising money to go towards Tona’s care, Casa Lupita, and getting Tona into a forever home. We are leaving Nicaragua and returning to Canada and it will be the staff at Casa Lupita who will keep Tona for the next week while he undergoes surgery. We hope by the time he has recovered we will know what our next steps are. We will provide updates and more details as soon as we have them!

If the unfortunate outcome is that Tona does not make it through his surgeries, we will be donating all money to Casa Lupita to help them continue doing the great work that they do - providing low cost (or no cost) animal care to the animals of Granada including a spay and neuter program to help with the stray cat and dog population.

Anything you can give helps!
