HELP to fight the wildfires in Argentina

Wildfires in Argentina's north have continued to spread through the province of Corrientes, burning almost 800,000 hectares, scarring farmlands and killing protected animals and plants. With nearly 7,000 fires, the most affected area is the Esteros del Ibera, the National Park and the Provincial Reserve, due to the catastrophic consequences on biodiversity.

 

 

The weather forecast is not encouraging, as high temperatures are expected over the weekend, with no rain, according to the National Meteorological Service.

 

 

Beyond the economic loses, the area is home to a unique biodiversity. In the Iberá National Park, one of the world's largest freshwater wetlands (the biggest after Amazonia), the fires have affected diverse wildlife, which includes threatened animals such as the marsh deer, the alligator (yacaré)  and more than 380 species of birds.

 

 

The huge losses from the fire are a sad example of how climate change and human activity are destroying the environment and causing economic losses. “The causes of this disaster must be sought in the terrible combination of a great drought, global climate change, together with bad local development models based on exotic forest species, rice fields and cattle ranching on wetlands” (Enrique Viale, president of the Argentine Association of Environmental Lawyers).

 

 

 

Fire brigades in Argentina consist of volunteers and they need all kinds of supplies to keep fighting the flames. At the same time, wild animals are approaching the cities looking for water and help.
