Bile Duct Cancer, also known as, (Metastatic) Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare form of cancer that statistically affects only 1/8000 white males over the age of 70. Well, back in April of this year, I...a black female under the age of 50... was diagnosed with it. My life hasn’t been the same since.
We’ve all heard it… “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” I travel to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston from Dallas bi-weekly for two to three doctors' appointments, tests, and an 8-and-a-half-hour chemotherapy treatment. Although I try to keep my “game face" for the few people that may see me the weeks that fall in between, I spend most of my time battling the side effects of the treatment. Needless to say, it’s been difficult and oftentimes impossible to work. Most days, maintaining has been nothing short of a miracle, especially considering my travel costs and medical bills. The ever changing face of insurance, particularly for a self-employed cancer patient, has presented its own set of challenges to ensure the continuation of care and medications that my life, literally, depends upon.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8
My faith has been tested, but more than ever, I now firmly walk in faith knowing that God has blessed my journey.
For months my inner circle has encouraged me to consider Crowd Funding to allow people who’ve inquired and wanted to help me, to do so. Proud… I've argued and resisted the idea. As financially devastated as this horrific disease has rendered me, I’m just not hardwired to accept help from anyone without knowing I can somehow repay them.
I am deeply humbled by your interest in joining me in this fight, but most importantly for your love, support and prayers.
My hope is to not only survive this cancer, but conquer it! I am my mother's child (God rest her soul), and I too am a Maverick because that's how God made me.
Despite my initial prognosis, I am still here. GOD HAS GOT ME!
