Help the Women of Scarborough House

Tax deductible
These courageous women need your help to remodel their kitchen and baths.

Scarborough House is a three-quarter-way sober living facility for women recovering from alcohol and drug dependency. Located in the historic Tremont area of Cleveland, Scarborough Hall, as it was then known, first opened its doors to women in 1985. Then, as now, it was our belief that recovering women can be valuable and effective contributors to their communities. Our role is to ensure that they are given this chance by providing the safe, sober, and supportive atmosphere they need and deserve.

A commitment to living a sober, productive life.

Scarborough House can accommodate up to 8 residents at a time. To maintain residency, participants must be employed full-time, remain alcohol and drug free, be active in a twelve-step recovery program, and commit to living a sober, productive lifestyle. Typical length of stay is from six months to one year.

Services available to women of Scarborough House include: weekly house meetings focused on developing life management skills; individual counseling to address specific personal needs; access to outside resources for physical and behavioral health care, as well as educational and employment counseling.

Why it works.

Scarborough House focuses on helping residents learn the skills they need to successfully return to society and live independently. Our residents learn to work collaboratively toward shared goals, cultivating a sense of personal responsibility for themselves and others.

Follow-up interviews with Scarborough alumni who have returned to their homes, families and careers provide ample support for the success of this approach. Stories regularly include such accomplishments as returning to school and receiving diplomas, landing new jobs and promotions, proudly earning their own way, no longer dependent on public assistance.

Our fundraising goal.

Scarborough House is comprised of two separate dwellings built on the same property. The rear building, which houses 4 women, desperately needs a new kitchen and bath.  The front building, which houses another 4 women, plus the resident manager, is also in need of a bathroom upgrade. Friends of Scarborough House have volunteered to help with general labor and some of the necessary supplies, but we still face significant expenses to pay for fixtures and appliances, as well as plumbing and electrical. The estimated cost to complete the entire project is $35,000.

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, your donations to Scarborough House are fully tax-deductible. GoFundMe contributions are processed via PayPal Giving and, upon donation, you will receive a tax-deductible receipt.

We don’t believe in coincidences – only miracles.

Many times throughout our 33-year history, when funds were short and needs many, help just seemed to appear. It came in the form of groceries, money, or a new washing machine. Sometimes it was merely the encouragement to keep going in the face of long odds.

Your being here today and reading this page could be considered a coincidence. Or part of something bigger. We choose to believe it was the answer to a prayer. In any event, thank you from all of us at Scarborough House for taking the time to consider helping in our mission to provide hope –and a much needed path forward– to women in recovery.
