My name is Kim Moran Irizarry, I live in Chicago, IL, but I’m originally from the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. Most of my family still lives there and I go visit whenever I can!
As you may already know, this past September 20th, hurricane Maria made landfall on PR, completely destroying the island as we know it. My family is alive and well, but unfortunately, my dad’s cousin, Maribel Mercado and her husband, David López lost their home.
This is the López-Mercado family. Maribel and David are the loving parents of Kenneth, 25, Keshley, 22, and Keven, 18. Maribel and David live with Keshley and Keven in the Kennedy neighborhood of Quebradillas, PR, a small town in the northwest part of the island. They lived in a wooden house; the second story of my aunt Titi Rafy’s house. This is their wooden house before the storm.
Sadly, as was the case with many Puerto Ricans, the López-Mercado’s preparations were no match for Maria’s devastating winds. This is what their home looks like now, after the storm.
The López-Mercado mean the world to me, and I want to do everything possible to help them get back on their feet. Which is why I’m asking for your help! I am collecting monetary donations that will go directly to the Lopez-Mercado family, so that they can start re-building their home and replacing clothes, furniture, and appliances they lost to the hurricane.
The López-Mercado are the most humble people I know. They are the embodiment of what it means to be Puerto Rican: passionate, hard-working, and always willing to lend a hand. Let’s help them get back on their feet! No donation is too small! Anything you can help us with will be greatly appreciated.
